Description : The very sudden passing of H. Grant Barnes at his home, Ballydown Beach, Lake Simcoe, on Wednesday, June 6, removed a gentlman who was well known to many Bradford residents during a long period of years. He had suffered a serious illness a number of years ago but appeared to be enjoying fairly good health and was carrying on his teaching duties at Lefroy until the last.Mr. Barnes was born at Stouffville 59 years ago and was educated in Stouffville and Markham schools and the Ontario Faculty of Education. He taught school for 39 years and served from 1914 to 1918 with the Canadian Army during World War I.On April 19, 1923, Mr. Barnes was married at Bradford to Catherine Davey, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Davey of Bradford, who survives him with their three children, Capt. Leslie Barnes, Fredericton, N.B.; Mrs. Lew. Holwell (Jean) of Toronto; and William D. Barnes of Ottawa. Also surviving are his father, Mr. Everett Barnes of Stouffville; one sister, Mrs. Vera Burnett of Stouffville; and two brothers, Murray Barnes of Stouffville and Bruce Barnes of Halifax, N.S.The deceased was a member of the United Church; of the Mount Albert Onward Lodge I.O.O.F.; and of the Masonic Lodge, Merrickville.The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon, June 9, from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home, Bradford, with interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.Six nephews acted as pallbearers, namely, Keith Davey, Bill Davey, Ray Davey, Frank Burnett, Gwynne Barnes and Bob Barnes.Friends attending the funeral included those from out of town coming from Midland, Elmvale, Orr Lake, Orillia, Cookstown, Lefroy, Toronto, Stouffville and Whitby.
