He was 59.Mr. Wilson's police career began in 1939 when he served with the Barrie Town Police. He transferred in 1946 to the Ontario Provincial Police serving in Bradford, Stayner and Bracebridge. He was promoted to sergeant in 1963, and returned to the Bradford Detachment in 1967.Reg Wilson made headlines in 1951 while he was a corporal in Bradford. He saw three men enter the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce on Holland
Street. In plain clothes, and without a revolver, he suspected something was wrong.I didn't like the look of them... they were all wearing hats and at that time of the year (July 26) it was too hot to wear hats" said Sergeant Wilson in a later account. The men were members of the Boyd Gang who were wanted on armed robbery charges across the province.Wilson raced up to his apartment located over the bank grabbed his police issue Webley revolver returned to the street and opened fire putting a hole through the windshield of the getaway car. The three masked men returned his shots with a hail of bullets and managed to escape. Reg Wilson chased them in his cruiser but was outpaced. He was then assigned to Toronto Police to check police mug shots and help in the investigation. The gang who used walkie talkie radios to evade police were arrested after a raid on a Toronto rooming house which netted Lawrence Shirley the strong arm man of the gang. Shortly after questioning Shirley Leonard Jackson Frank Watson and Joseph Suchan were arrested and charged with the Bradford robbery. Within three weeks of the bank raid the case was closed and the money back in the bank.Reg Wilson was given a military style funeral with an honour guard of 10 commissioned high-ranking officers and six pallbearers. There were also four honourary pallbearers: Arthur Evans MPP for Simcoe Centre Corporal Gordon Barber (retired) of the Bradford Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police Charlie Evans former member of town council and Corporal Britnell of Bradford Detachment of Ontario Provincial Police. An honour guard escorted the car bearing Sergeant Wilson from the gates of Barrie Union Cemetery to the graveside after a service at the Jennett Funeral Home in Barrie.Sergeant Wilson is survived by his widow Marion and a daughter Mrs. Jean Fitzmaier of Bracebridge.Sergeant Wison was a member of the Masonic Lodge a Shriner a member of the Canadian Trotting Association the Canadian Standardbred Horse Society and the Ontario Harness Horse Association."
