Dalston church parishioners re-create the 'good old days'

"Members and visitors at Dalston United Church took a step back in time Sunday. Their minister, Rev. Arnie Chamberlain, dressed in the garb of a circuit preacher. Their church became a log house with no windows, an open doorway, no floor, and walls caked with mud. And their services came from an 1825 Methodist prayer book. Sunday marked the half-way point in a year of celebrations for the church's 150th anniversary. Parishioners and visitors numbering 150, held services in a small tent next to the church on Highway 93 for an old-fashioned tent and picnic meeting..."

A meeting of nations

"The Djurgarden Mini-Midgets of Stockholm, Sweden arrived in Canada on Boxing Day to begin a five-game tour against Ontario midget hockey teams from Barrie, Cobourg, Oshawa, Bay Ridges, and Newmarket. For the 20 young hockey players and 14 adults who accompanied them, this was their first visit to Canada and an exciting opportunity to combine good, competitive hockey with lots of sightseeing. It was soon apparent, however, that the players were neither novices at hockey nor travelling. Despite the fact that the Swedish players were only 15 years of age (Canadian midgets are usually 15 or 16), the Swedes emerged from the five games with three wins, a loss, and a tie. The Swedes defeated Cobourg 6-4, Bay Ridges 5-1, and Newmarket 5-3. They battled Oshawa to a 4-4 tie and were upset by Barrie 7-3. Although they had never come to Canada before, the team has toured Germany, Finland, and Norway. Their experience showed."

The bride was attired in a beautiful suit of drab broadcloth and blouse of white taffeta silk, the yoke being overlaid with embroidered white chiffon and draped with white chiffon and sequin trimming. She wore a black silk velvet hat with tam crown of white silk overlaid with black sequin, white mohair and black chenille, and trimmed with large black and white plumes. The groom's gift to his bride was a beautiful crescent set with pearls and three stars of turquoise. The bridesmaid's and best man's gifts from the groom were a gold bracelet and necktie pin. After the honeymoon trip the young couple will reside on the farm formerly owned by Mr. Thos. Hamer, near Bradford, and purchased about a year ago by Mr. Faris. The correspondence wishes the newly-wedded pair lifelong happiness and success."
