Description : After leaving a legacy of his missionary work throughout the world, 76 year-old Bradford born Rev. Donald K. Faris passed away last week in his home in Kelowna, B.C.Although he did most of his noteworthy work in China and lived his last years in British Columbia, his roots remained in the Scotch Settlement here in Bradford" says Mrs. Murray Faris one of the last of the Faris families to remain on the old Faris settlement. The farmland on which Murray Faris still farms has been in the Faris clan for four generations now. The farm next to his is the one on which Rev. Donald Faris was born and raised. This farm is now owned by Clarence Baynes. It stands on the 5th
Concession Road. The Rev. Faris' great-grandfather came from County Caven in Ireland and settled with the Scots at the old Scotch Settlement here in Bradford. The young Donald lived on the land his great-grandfather had farmed and on Sundays attended the Second West Gwillimbury Presbyterian Church. His inclination toward the church and missionary work were shown at an early age. He left Bradford to attend the school of theology at Queens University in Kingston. He later attended and graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College. In 1925 at the age of 27 he went to China as a missionary. There he developed a self-help training program for agricultural technicians at Honan. Later when Japanese occupational forces took over the area he remained to direct a rural college for the University of Nanking. During this time he planted a number of Canadian fruit trees around the area where he worked. Later with the Japanese invasion these trees were destroyed. However like Faris' spirit the trees were not to be forgotten for grafts of the trees had been taken and were distributed throughout China. They live on today.During the Second World War Faris was still in this war torn area. In 1943 he was interned by the Japanese. In 1945 he was repatriated and spent the last few months of the war as a chaplain with the RCAF.After the war he was chosen by the United Nations to act as a liason officer between the Chinese Nationalists and the Communist forces during the rebuilding of the dikes on the Yellow River. These dikes had been destroyed in 1938 to stop the invading Japanese. It was here that Rev. Faris earned his title as "The most shot-at U.N. representative in China". In 18 months Faris had seen to the closing of a mile long gap in the dikes. This enabled the reclamation of 10000 square miles of agricultural land. In doing this Faris directed 20000 workmen and at one time nearly 400000 Red Chinese soldiers in the huge rebuilding task.It was also at this time that he was shot at on 14 different occasions while travelling between the Nationalist and Communist frontiers. With the completion of the Yellow River dike Faris was awarded the Order of the Brilliant Star highest civilian honour by Nationalist General Chiang Kai-shek.In 1950 Faris went to Korea to initiate more self-help programs in an attempt to restore some semblance of self-sufficiency in a war torn country. In 1955 he went to Thailand to train the rural workers in community and agricultural development. Later he travelled to India where he worked with UNICEF in setting up a nutrition assistance program in more than 1000 Indian villages. In his 41 years of missionary work he assisted countless thousands of people throughout the Orient mostly through the work of UNICEF. Yet still he always had time to return to his place of birth in Bradford. His last visit came in 1967 when he came to help in the centennial celebrations at the old historic "kirk" at the Scotch Settlement. He leaves his widow Anna and his three sons Donald Jr. Douglas and Kenneth."
