Earl Rowe is guest speaker

"Honorable Earl Rowe, former Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, was guest speaker at the Fisher's Corners Womens Institute Meeting January 20. A great supporter of women's institutes, Mr. Rowe spoke to the women and their husbands for about 45 minutes on current issues like the Quebec problem and reminsced about politicking in the area in horse and buggy das. He expressed the need for multi-lingualism in Canada, rather than just bilingualism, explaining that Canada was a land of many nationalities and not just French and English. Well qualified to discuss national affairs, Mr. Rowe said he had personally known and worked with eight of Canada's prime ministers, including Pierre Trudeau. Described as a very warm and down-to-earth person by the women, Mr. Rowe is currently in retirement at his farm near Newton Robinson. He told the group he spends much of his time exercising his horses and reading."

Early days, at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Coulson's Hill

Community : Coulson's Hill

Description : Reverend Adam Elliot was the first missionary to bring Church of England services to the Coulson's Hill area. In 1833, he was appointed to hold services were few churches, those services were held in homes, schools and barns. By 1837, the population of West Gwillimbury had grown, and more permanent arrangements were made, Rev. F.L. Osler was names incumbent of the Parish of West Gwillimbury, and a church was built near Bond Head in 1839. His mission consisted of no less than 28 stations. At Coulson's Hill, Rev. Osler held services in a school house, but as the congregation grew, he received permission from the Bishop of Toronto, John Strachan, to buy land for a church and cemetery. The land was provided by John Coulson, who had come from Tyrone, Ireland, in 1822. He lived in the "Red House" on Concession 11, Lot 15. The first St. Paul's Church was built in 1854. The wooden frame building stood on wooden blocks, and Bishop Strachan preached at the opening services. Services were led by Rev. Osler's assistant, Reverend Arthur Hill. Hill later returned to England, and in 1857, Rev. Osler left Bond Head for Ancaster, Ontario. In 1867, St. Paul's broke its connection with Trinity Church in Bond Head, and joined the new Parish, of Trinity Church, Bradford; Christ Church, Middleton; and St. Paul's Coulson's Hill. Rev. Charles Ruttan was the rector. Among the family names mentioned in the church's early parish records are the Baynes, Bowles, Duck, Fennell, Hambly, Hughes, Magee, Nesbitt, Roberts, Scanlon, Selby, Sheldon, Thorpe, Wood and Woods families. In 1889, Rev. Alfred J. Grier found the church to be badly in need of repair. The foundations were replaced with brick and stone, the building was faced with brick, and a spire, over 100' high, was added. Unfortunately, on December 14, 1915, the church burned to the ground, destroying the old service register and precious records of the earliest pioneers. By November, 1916, the present church was erected, and was consecrated by Bishop Sweeny five years later.
