"Honorable Earl Rowe, former Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, was guest speaker at the Fisher's Corners Womens Institute Meeting January 20. A great supporter of women's institutes, Mr. Rowe spoke to the women and their husbands for about 45 minutes on current issues like the Quebec problem and reminsced about politicking in the area in horse and buggy das. He expressed the need for multi-lingualism in Canada, rather than just bilingualism, explaining that Canada was a land of many nationalities and not just French and English. Well qualified to discuss national affairs, Mr. Rowe said he had personally known and worked with eight of Canada's prime ministers, including Pierre Trudeau. Described as a very warm and down-to-earth person by the women, Mr. Rowe is currently in retirement at his farm near Newton Robinson. He told the group he spends much of his time exercising his horses and reading."
"The First Bradford Brownies served tea and cookies to about 70 members of the Gay Sixties senior citizens' club last week. Seven-year-olds Evelyn Schlarb and Libbie Evans did the honors for Lila Proctor (left) and Bertha Langford, both John street residents. The club's upcoming activities include a trip to Barrie on Saturday, a trip to Woodbine raceway July 7, and a picnic at Midhurst in August."
"Alex Haley in his recent novel, Roots, aptly illustrated the significance and importance of having a sense of where one has come from. A person who has such a sense of his genealogical history is Charles Evans, Bradford's nominee to receive the jubilee commemorative medal. Dates are special to Mr. Evans because they indicate the changes that have occurred in his family's growth and development since moving into the Bradford area more than a century ago. Mr. Evans is a fifth-generation of the Evans family to live near Bradford."
"The Annual Junior Plowing Match and Coaching Day was held last Thursday at the farm of Harold Bell, Gilford. Participating in the day were Marie Thomas, Susan Dawney, Neil Thomas, John Robinson, and Tom Robinson, all turning in a worthy performance in their respective classes. These young people were coached throughout the day by Keith Robinson and Bill Thomas, under head coach Bill Timbers, former world champion plowman. Queen of the Furrow, Susan Gilmore, coached by her father, Earl Gilmore, was also plowing in preparation for future competition. Jack Campbell and Frank Cowan, also members of the South Simcoe Plowmen's Association were on hand to assist with the most successful day."
"John Diefenbaker, Canada's 13th Prime Minister, will be making a sentimental journey on October 15 when he visits the York-Simcoe area. It was 18 years ago when The Chief last appeared in this area. The year was 1958, and his visit came on the eve of that year's federal election when the Conservatives swept to the greatest ever victory for any Canadian government. Of 245 seats in the House of Commons, Diefenbaker's candidates claimed 205 of them to form the most powerful majority government in Canadian history."
"Peter Born, son of Mr. and Mrs. Josef Born of Bradford, received his Bachelor of Science honors degree in geology from Carleton University in Ottawa in early November. A graduate of Bradford District High School, he is currently enrolled in a Master of Science geology program at Laurentian University in Sudbury.'
"Peter Smith and Lesley Barker proudly display the trophies they won last Thursday at the Bradford District High School's Drama Night. Lesley and Peter won the best actress and best actor awards for the second year in a row, the first time that has happened in the history of the school. The judge's decision was wildly applauded by the audience."
"The Tee-We-Gwill chapter of the Women's Institute held their first meeting with this year's officers last Monday night at the home of Mrs. Barbara Wilcox on Beeton Road. The Women's Institute was originally founded in Ontario to educate women in rural areas in the homemaking field. Since then it has become a world-wide community services oriented organization. The Tec-We-Gwill chapter sponsors a Can-Save Child in Austria, as well as sponsoring the Tec-Gwill 4-H Club for young women."

"James Robert Corneau received a Honors Degree in Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario. The Bachelor of Arts Degree was conferred on June 4. Mr. and Mrs. A. Corneau attended the ceremony."
"On the way west! Well, maybe. Last Thursday, the great Canadian wagon train made its way through Bond Head. Here the group is making its way up the hill on Highway 27. The horses took a run to make it up the hill, then had to pull in so they wouldn't run away going down the other side. The main feature of the event was the long lineup of cars waiting to pass the train. The train was re-routed off Highway 27 to Alliston and by Tuesday still had not passed Barrie."
