"Bradford Women's Institute last Wednesday celebrated 50 years "For Home and Country", the motto of the world-wide organization. Long time member Mrs. H.L. Blackwell cuts the anniversary cake fashioned in the shape of the figure 50, as Bradford W.I. President Mrs. Dan Clements looks on."

"When Southern Ontario residents put away all their snowmobiling equipment and winter clothes, they thought the long, cold winter had ended, but Old Man Winter decided he still had some say in the matter. Over a foot of snow covered southern Simcoe County and winds gusting up to 50 miles an hour created 15-foot drifts that blocked traffic, closed businesses, schools, and stranded travellers. The Ontario Provincial Police detachment had their hands full like everybody else. The detachment has waded through only a handful of accident reports and so far they report four property damage collisions involving six vehicles on Highway 400 between Highways 88 and 89. Five property damage collisions involving six vehicles south of Highway 88 were also looked into. There are still numerous accidents that have yet to be fully investigated."

"Miraculously, the driver of this truck survived. The flat bed tractor trailer had been carrying a load of steel south on Highway 400 when just south of the Highway 88 intersection it spun around and overturned in the west ditch facing northward. The car was demolished, the seat and windshield being forced out."

In the lower photograph, a simple cairn marking the birthplace of the famed Canadian physician and medical author, Sir William Osler, is shown. It is located on the hill across from Penville Creek on the 7th Line."

Description : The West Gwillimbury History project (WEGWHIST for short) is gathering information and interest, pursuing the many aspects of Who, What, Where, When and How of the historic Township. The story begins about the time that the Township was surveyed in 1819, 183 years ago. The record-keeping of those days was not too detailed, but it is surprising the records that are available, and the story that they tell. All are welcome to come to the meeting and hear about WEGWHIST. A number of items need to be researched, such as old mills, post offices, meeting halls and fraternal societies. Pen, paper and an inquisitive mind will qualify you as a researcher.

We need someone who can help us develop a marketing plan and execute it. Governor Simcoe Slept Here: The Legacy of West Gwillimbury is the book being written by the volunteers of the WEGWHIST project. To help pay for publication costs, a Patrons Page has been established. Donors will be recognized in print, in this wonderful book that will be published this year, and hopefully available by December.

"Dunnville used car dealer Robert Rowe won the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado at the annual Lions Club car draw Monday night. A capacity crowd remained past midnight to watch as the tickets on the board dwindled, drawing ever closer to the big prize. The happy owner of the new Cadillac had his ticket drawn last in the elimination contest. The draw was a huge success for the Bradford Lions, and the event is rapidly becoming one of the social highlights of the year. All proceeds from the draw will go to the Bradford Lions Pool."

"Simcoe Manor, Beeton has two spanking new wheelchairs for residents' use. Last Thursday Women's Auxiliary president, Mary Cannon of Gilford made the presentation of the chairs valued at $230. A picture of Jesus in contemporary art was also presented in memory of Mrs. Isabelle Hopkins, a long-time resident and auxiliary worker. The picture will hang in the chapel. Manor superintendent Ed Boynton accepted the gifts in a special ceremony before the auxiliary's monthly public euchre. Seen here are Mrs. Cannon; auxiliary treasurer, Willow Kneeshaw, Mr. Boynton and his wife, Maisie, convenor of the auxiliary tuck shop."
