Description : Although not enjoying the best of health for some time, the last illness of Mrs. James Armstrong, of 98 John Street E., Bradford, was not lengthy, when she passed away in York County Hospital on Friday, November 11. Mrs. Armstrong was a life-long resident of Bradford, where she received her schooling as the former Violet Jane Saint. With her marriage to the late James Armstrong she continued to reside in Bradford, where she enjoyed life with the company of her relatives and long-time friends.Her church was Trinity Anglican, Bradford. Mrs. Armstrong's husband predeceased her in 1956 and she is survived by one daughter (Shirley), Mrs. William Watson of Bradford and her grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Sara Reeves of Bradford, and a brother, Mr. Leonard Saint of Bradford also survive. The funeral was held on November 14 from the Lewis Funeral Home, with her rector, Rev. W. H. Warnica, conducting the services. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.The pallbearers were Messrs. James Church, Gordon Church, Jack Church, Allen Hodgson, Mel. Saint and Roy Saint.

Description : The death occurred at York County Hospital, Newmarket, on Tuesday, January 4, of Mrs. Lawrence Church of Bradford. Mrs. Church had been in poor health for several years, during the early years of which she had been cared for at her home here by members of her family. In more recent months she had been with her daughter, Mrs. O. Gould in Newmarket, from whose home she was moved to the hospital a few weeks before her death. Mrs. Church was the former Mabel May Saint and was born in Bradford and had spent her entire life here where she was well liked and held in high esteem by all who knew her. On April 26, 1911, she married Lawrence Church of Bradford, who survives her, with their family of three sons and three daughters, namely, James and Gordon of Bradford, John of Schomberg, Mrs. O. Gould (Marion) of Newmarket, Mrs. R. Curtis (Eileen) of Kirkland Lake, and Mrs. W. Covert (May) of Barrie; and fourteen grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. W. Reeves (Sadie), and Mrs. Jas. Armstrong (Jane), and one brother, Leonard Saint, all of Bradford. Mrs. Church was a devoted mother, wife and sister, and will be sadly missed in her home and among members of her family, among whom she was held in sincere affection. She will also be missed by townspeople, especially in the women's groups, where she had long been a faithful worker in the W.A. of Trinity Anglican Church and Bradford Women's Institute.She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church.The funeral was held from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon. Services were conducted by her rector, Rev. W. S. Johnson and interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bradford. Six nephews were the pallbearers, namely, Norman and Roy Church and Larry Saldeld, all of Pontiac, Mich., and Ken, Mel and Roy Saint of Bradford.

Description : The passing of Mrs. Isaac Coburn in Newmarket Hospital on Tuesday, May 24, came as a great shock to her family and friends. Nearly four weeks before her death she suffered a heart seizure but it was not regarded as very severe. A week later she was moved to the hospital where she appeared to be making satisfactory progress. On the morning of May 24 she had just been made ready to have her breakfast when she passed away. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hosea Wilkinson of Bradford, Mrs. Coburn, whose maiden name was Grace Ethlyne Wilkinson, had resided here for all but a few years of her life. She attended Bradford schools and being exceptionally gifted in needlework she was a milliner and dressmaker before her marriage in Toronto on January 31, 1912, to Isaac Edgar Coburn. A few years later Mr. and Mrs. Coburn returned to Bradford where they established their home. Nearly eight years ago Mr. Coburn passed away and Mrs. Coburn remained in her home with her daughter, Miss Gwenyth. Mrs. Coburn was never idle, a quality to which her home and its surroundings gave evidence. In addition to being a homemaker she was an energetic worker in the Woman's Auxiliary of her church, Bradford Presbyterian, and in Bradford Women's Institute. Mrs. Coburn is survived by two daughters, Audrey (Mrs. Ken Keith) of Bracebridge and Miss Gwenyth at home, and one son Ross, of Dorset, Ontario. Three brothers also survive, namely Arthur, Earle and Chester Wilkinson of Toronto. A fourth brother, Fred Wilkinson, predeceased her. The funeral was held from her late residence on Thursday, May 26. The services were taken by the former minister of Bradford Presbyterian Church of which she was a member, Rev. Mr. McLarnon of Toronto. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. Robt. McMaster, R. Magloughlen, Herb. Taylor, Harvey Curry, Lorne Fines and Percy Stephenson.

Description : After not enjoying good health for the past five years, Mrs. Ellen (Nellie) Collings of Bradford passed away at York County Hospital, Newmarket, on Monday, November 28, 1966, where she was admitted just one week previous. Born in Ottawa 73 years ago, she went to Kerrobert, Sask., as a young girl, where she resided until her marriage to Ernest R. Collings on June 10, 1914, when she moved to Bradford where she resided for the remainder of her life. Up to the time of failing health, Mrs. Collings was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and active in the church choir, quilting club, and a lifetime member of the Women's Auxiliary. She was also a life member of the Women's Institute, and a charter member of the I.O.D.E. and the Bradford Knitting Club. Predeceased by her husband in 1950, she is survived by four sons and three daughters: Mrs. Ellenor Peat of Newmarket, Mrs. Ross Griffith (Anita) of Bradford, Roy A. of Oshawa, Mrs. Gerald Rupke (Margery) of Kettleby, Irwin E., W. Bruce, and Keith R., all of Bradford, 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, Mrs. Emily Foster of Kerrobert, Sask., a sister, and two brothers, Arthur Sutton and Albert Sutton, both of British Columbia. The funeral was held on December 1, 1966, from the Lewis Funeral Home to Trinity Anglican Church. The service was conducted by her rector, Rev. W. H. Warnica. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The pallbearers were Norman Collings of Bradford, Dr. Verdon Foster, V.S., of Fergus, Bob McCague of Sarnia, Jim Church, Orville Hand and Edward Bulpit, all of Bradford.

Description : Death came with startling suddenness last Wednesday evening to one of Bradford's prominent business men, when Mr. William Francis Compton died at his home here. Mr. Compton had been at his place of business, Compton's IGA Groceteria, that day and came home around 6 p.m. He told Mrs. Compton that he was going to have a bath before having his dinner. Later he was found dead in the bathroom by his wife. Death is attributed to a blood clot reaching his heart.
Born in Morell, P.E.I., 67 years ago, Mr. Compton spent his early years in that province, going to U.S.A. in 1922, where he joined the A & P Stores Ltd. He returned in May, 1928, when A & P opened stores in Canada, and continued with that firm until coming to Bradford in 1944, when he purchased the long-established Sutherland's Grocery, operating the business during the first few years as Compton's Groceteria. In 1951 he joined Oshawa Wholesale as a charter member of the IGA in Canada. He continued to operate the business in the old stand until last year, when the beautiful new Compton's IGA was opened on John Street West. He was justly very proud of this fine new store, which was really the realization of a long anticipated plan. A good business man, exceptionally well trained in the food marketing business, Mr. Compton succeeded in his private business and also found time to devote energy to his municipality. He had served both as councillor and reeve of Bradford, in the years before the municipality gained town status, and had also served as president of Bradford Lions Club. Mr. Compton was married at Laggan, Ontario, in September, 1928, to Normanda MacNeil, who survives him with their family of two daughters, Joan (Mrs. K. L. Pond), Ottawa; Norma (Mrs. R. D. Duffy), Toronto; Gordon William, Bradford; sisters and brother, Esther (Mrs. V. H. Dockendorf), Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Frances (Mrs. A. R. Graham), Mussoorile, India; Lydia (deceased); Robbins, Morell, P.E.I. and Elizabeth (Mrs. W. H. Reich), Port Washington, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, who were the delight of his life, Dianne and David Compton and Janet, Allison and Christine Pond.
The funeral was held on Saturday, April 1, from his church, Bradford United, with Rev. D. J. Lute conducting the services. Temporary entombment was in the vault, with interment to be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bradford. The pallbearers were Keith Collings, Robert Hanna, Robert Veale Jr., Joseph Alebeck, Wallace Holmes and George Allan.The flower bearers were James Patton, Harold Newns, Charles Davidson, Ronald James and Lester Woolven.

Description : Mr. C. Albert Dimock, a well known and respected resident of Bradford for more than thirty years, passed away at York County Hospital, Newmarket, on February 20, 1964, following an illness of more than two months. Mr. Dimock was born in Hants County, Nova Scotia, and received his education at schools in Boston, Mass. As a young man he went to Western Canada where he met and married Minnie Hillacre at Glidden, Saskatchewan, in November 1917. While in Saskatchewan he homesteaded and then worked as a telephone linesman and mechanic. In 1932 Mr. and Mrs. Dimock and their two children, Hedley and Ilene, came to Bradford where Mr. Dimock operated a garage for some time. During the war years he was foreman with an aircraft company in London, Ontario, and in recent years he had been with Brad Walker Motors. Mr. and Mrs. Dimock's only son, Hedley, enlisted in the RCAF and after a distinguished career gave his life in the service over India in 1944. Mr. Dimock is survived by his wife; their only daughter Mrs. L. W. McKenney (Ilene), 57 Beaufort St., London, Ontario, and one brother, T. A. Dimock, 87 Elderslie Ave., Willowdale, Ontario. Mr. Dimock was an adherent of Bradford United Church. Until after receiving injuries in a motor vehicle accident a few years ago, he was active in both curling and bowling. The funeral was held from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home on February 22, with entombment in the vault at 6th Line Innisfil. Rev. W. N. Lee conducted the services.The pallbearers were Messers. J. Everitt, O. Hand, T. Fuller, A. Lee, M. Saint, B. Walker.

Description : Earle James Edney, 30, of Newton Robinson, was killed Feb. 28 about 11/2 miles south of Bond Head on No. 27 Highway, while driving north. According to police, the right front tire blew out on the 1957 El Rancho (Ranch Wagon) he was driving and it left the highway and hit a tree ten inches in diameter. Mr. Edney worked for Cecil Maynard of Schomberg garage. Mr. Edney is survived by his wife, the former Arlene Sturgeon, of West Gwillimbury, and two children, Jean 5 and Jimmy 4; his mother, Mrs. James Edney of Newton Robinson, and nine sisters, namely, Charlotte (Mrs. W. Birch), Toronto; Annie (Mrs. W. Madill), Bond Head; Laura, Toronto; Treva (Mrs. W. Agar), Beeton; Marjorie (Mrs. M. Connery), Weston; Ina (Mrs. J. Ainslie), Richmond Hill; Pearla (Mrs. G. Piggott), Rexdale; Doris (Mrs. R. Mills), Scarborough; Jean (Mrs. N. Staynor), Islington. Mr. Edney was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Bond Head. The funeral was from the Hughes Funeral Home, Cookstown, on Monday afternoon, with interment in Newton Robinson Cemetery. Coroner Dr. G. L. Blackwell of Bradford has ordered an inquest which will be held in Bradford Town Hall at 2 p.m. on March 15, 1963.
