SS #10: Newton Robinson Public School

Newton Robinson Public School between 1906-1912.
This school possibly began in the 1830s when it was Latimer's Corners, though the structure in the photograph was from 1875 on land purchased from James Downey. It joined with SS #12 of Tecumseth. There was only one teacher by 1920 because of low enrollment. The school was replaced in 1923, though by 1959 students were transferred to the nearby Fisher's Corners School. The Hon. Earl Rowe bought the school (two small buildings at this time) in 1960 and turned it into residence.

Church celebrates 90th

"The congregation of Newton Robinson United Church is holding a three-fold celebration this year. The church, whose spire is a landmark for those travelling Highway 27 between Cookstown and Bond Head is marking its 90th anniversary. The celebration will be for the long, lively past, the country-quiet present and a re-dedication to wider community service in the future."

Something for all

"The Newton Robinson anniversary fair on Saturday featured something for everyone. There was a large crowd out to enjoy the many tings a country fair has to offer many people enjoyed the display of artifacts of a bygone era, and Gwen Taylor was on hand at the display to point out things of interest to the visitors. Women at the tea tables were busy serving tea and coffee, giving many people a chance to renew acquaintances. The history of the Newton Robinson United Church was also on sale, along with hasti-notes with the church's picture on the front."
