West Gwillimbury-Bradford Centennial Park Officially Opened by Lieut. Governor Hon. W. Earl Rowe.

The West Gwillimbury and Bradford Centennial Park was officially opened on Saturday afternoon September 9, by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Hon. W. Earl Rowe.

Ont the platform with Hon. and Mrs. Rowe were members of council for West Gwillimbury and Bradford and West Gwillimbury and Bradford Parks Board, the Warden and Clerk of Simcoe County, the Lions and Rotary V.I.P. Committee and the wives of a few of the officials.

His Honor, the Lieutenant Governor, reviewed the development and growth of the Bradford district, speaking on this subject from his wealth of knowledge. His address was a highlight of the day and his presence and officiating at this memorable occasion in the life of the community was appreciated by everyone.

The day also marked the turning on of the new lights for the ball park, and the Lieutenant Governor performed this duty.

"Charges of neglect have been laid against the mother of the 12-year-old girl who drowned in the Holland River on Monday, August 5, according to the Executive Director of the York Region Children's Aid Society, Donald Van Camp.
Eleanor Lowder, mother of Betty Lowder, the girl who drowned, has been charged under Section 40 part (1) of the Child Welfare Act which makes it an offense for anyone to leave a child unattended for an unreasonable length of time without proper supervision. Under the provisions of the act the maximum fine the court is able to impose in such a case is $200 and a maximum one year prison term.
Hearings on the charge will take place in camera on September 3 in Newmarket family court.
The surviving five Lowder children are in the care and custody of the Children's Aid Society, according to Van Camp. After the accident one of the children was in the care of relatives, according to him, but now all are with the society.
Any inquest into the drowning will have to wait until the charges have been taken care of by the courts, according to Dr. Robert Seaver, who is acting as coroner in the case.
"Its all up in the air right now," said Doctor Seaver, "any charges will take precedent. Until some of these things are straightened out," he said referring to the charges, "we can't go ahead." He is also waiting on further details on the accident to become available from the police and the autopsy report.
The possibility of an inquest will still be up in the air, according to Dr. Seaver, until it is decided if some particular aspect of Betty Lowder's death has to be "...brought out."
The police will only be acting as witnesses and assisting the Children's Aid Society in this case according to Deputy Chief Robert Hood of the York Regional Police. Police could have laid the charge against Mrs. Lowder, but they deferred to the Children's Aid Society in the case.
The drowning was the first case in which Bradford firemen were called to the Marsh area which recently switched to Newmarket for its fire protection. The Bradford department's answering of the call raises the question of the $800 charge which King Township is supposed to pay when the Bradford department enters King.
When asked about the fee and whether it will be charged, Bradford mayor Joe Magani replied, "If someone is drowning and we coulz be of some assistance, I don't think its a matter of dollars and cents."

"Bradford Army and Navy Veterans had a fowl dinner and get-together in their new club rooms on the evening of Remembrance Day, Friday, Nov. 11th, when veterans and a few invited guests to the number of nearly forty, sat down to the wonderful repast provided. Before partaking of the meal two minutes' silence were observed in memory of comrades who fell in the Great War. After dinner Rev. C.H. Forth, who, it was announced, had accepted the office of Honorary Chaplain of the Bradford branch of the Army and Navy Veterans, occupied the chair, when a programme of short speeches and music was carried out. Reeve Nolan, who was one of those present, during his remarks, complimented the local Veterans upon the most able manner in which they arranged and carried out their big three days' celebration the past summer, and assured them that if they attempted another such affair in the future they would receive even a greater measure of support from the public of Bradford.
The Veterans are to be complimented upon the transformation they have made in the appearance of the large room above the Fire Hall, which they are now using as their club room. We would suggest that anyone who has an easy chair which they have discarded or put away in the attic to be forgotten, might get in touch with the Veterans, who could make good use of it in their club room."

"Dunnville used car dealer Robert Rowe won the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado at the annual Lions Club car draw Monday night. A capacity crowd remained past midnight to watch as the tickets on the board dwindled, drawing ever closer to the big prize. The happy owner of the new Cadillac had his ticket drawn last in the elimination contest. The draw was a huge success for the Bradford Lions, and the event is rapidly becoming one of the social highlights of the year. All proceeds from the draw will go to the Bradford Lions Pool."
