1959 Fire - Bradford Fire Department

"This week's photo, courtesy of the Bradford Fire Department, depicts the fire in February of 1959 which destroyed a large block of the downtown section, from Evans and Evans to the police department. The fire swept through several businesses, unprotected by fire walls. Firefighters from five arena departments battled almost 20 hours to quell the stubborn blaze which caused an estimated $500,000 damage. This week's photo was suggested by Ernest and Lola Peterman of Bradford who sent in a newspaper clipping of the fire."

319 Simcoe Road

The large, two-sorey structure located on the east side at 319 Simcoe Road was the home of George Peterman, his wife Sarah (Leopard) and his children (Ernest, Melville, Gurnard, Bertrand, Ila, Norma and Doris) many years ago. He bought Lowery farm (on the south side of Simcoe Road to the 6th Concession, south boundary of Bradford, and north side of the road to the Kneeshaw farm). George raised cows and farmed. Ila and Doris delivered milk (produced by cows on their farm) to Bradford by horse and wagon twice a day. There was a large barn just west and south of the house and road. A milk house was once attached to the woodshed at the back end of the house. Ernie worked on the marsh haying, labored drilling the town well, and then worked for Collings in the marsh. Mell laboured and worked with marsh vegetables and owned marsh land. Gurnard laboured. Bert, a good sportsman, left the farm after finishing school. (1, 2)

Description : Ernest Peterman, 91, of Bradford, died Tuesday Oct. 16 at the Mississauga Nursing Home. Born Oct. 8, 1893, he was married in Bradford in 1964 to his wife, the late Lola Miller. Surviving are two sisters, Vera Williams, Mississauga and Norma Robb, Newmarket. He was also predeceased by four brothers, Gernald, Monty, Melville and Bert and two sisters, Doris Danas and Ila Gibb. Funeral services were held Thursday Oct. 18 at the chapel of Lathangue & Skwarchuk Funeral Home in Bradford with Rev. H. Dahlin officiating. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
