An article about a highly destructive fire that swept through Holland Street, destroying multiple buildings, businesses and homes. The original article appeared in the May 22nd, 1871 edition of the Toronto Daily Telegraph and was reprinted in 1901 as part of the "Looking Backward" series.

"Bradford's town council has marked this Centennial year in very suitable manner by doing a very complete "face-lifting" job at the venerable town hall. A complete and permanent refinishing of the exterior of the building, together with a few needed repairs, and a paint job, where paint can be applied, has worked wonders." ...

This two-storey structure is located at 218 Simcoe Road. It is the fourth house on the west side (south of the “Y” in Simcoe Road). Robert Stewart, his wife, and family lived here many years ago. His son George, who married Ethel Waldruff, played lacrosse and was a painter and paper hanger for Billie Sutton. Robert owned 75 acres of land and worked as the town clerk for 25 years. He also farmed (and later rented) his land. Ed Cave and his wife (Ida) and daughter (Violet) moved to this area from Newton Robinson and eventually bought and worked a farm. He delivered milk and had a dairy in town. Ed was a staunch Orangeman who played King Billie riding his white horse at the 12th of July parade. There was a gravel pit on the property. He eventually sold his farm to Mike Sklencar, John Kulha, Steve Brinkos and John Kashmere. They divided the remaining land and sold the lots along Simcoe Road. The large house was converted into four apartments that were used as their living quarters while they each built a house. The structure was still being used as an apartment building in 1995. (1, 2)

An 1903 reprint/summary of parts of the March 26th, 1863 edition of the South Simcoe Times. Printed by the Bradford Witness as part of the "Bradford 4_ Years Ago" series. It has significant information and parts from the mentioned edition.

Mr. Robert Stewart was the Municipal Clerk and Treasurer of Bradford starting in 1861. He had previously run a grocery and liquor store, but the fire of 1892 put him out of business. He was born in Kincardinshire, Scotland, who came to Canada in 1854, and settled in Bradford.

William Campbell was originally from Ireland, and came to Canada in 1857, first settling in Brantford, then Newmarket, before coming to Bradford in 1862. He was a grain buyer, and dealer in coal, lumber, and shingles. He was also on the municipal council, and reeve for two years, as well as chief engineer of the fire company. He was the father of Dr. L.H. Campbell, and Mr. W.L. Campbell, and the grandfather of Lewis B. Campbell, who still resides in Bradford.
