Description : Death came with startling suddenness to Mr. T. Adrain Bateman, well known townsman and life-long resident of this district, on New Year's Day. Apparently enjoying excellent health, Mr. Bateman had had a severe cold early last week which threatened to develop into pneumonia and, while he felt completely better, it was thought advisable that he and Mrs. Bateman spend New Year's Day quietly at home. A few minutes after their noon meal he complained of a severe pain. Mrs. Bateman summoned the doctor, but Mr. Bateman passed away within a few minutes.Born on the Bateman homestead,
Concession 1, Innisfil, son of the late Thomas and Dora Thorpe Bateman, on July 4, 1880, Adrian Bateman attended Cherry Creek school and resided in that township until the family moved to Sharon in 1895. Seven years later they returned and the family made their home in West Gwillimbury on what is now the Kirkup farm. In 1911 he maried Ethel Ralston of West Gwillimbury and they made their home on the farm for the next twelve years. In 1923 Mr. Bateman purchased the farm where his son James now resides on the Bond Head road, and he and Mrs. Bateman resided there until their retirement in Bradford in 1945.In his earlier years, Mr. Bateman was a Methodist and later a United Church member. He attended Ebenezer, then Bond Head United Churches, and latterly Bradford United Church. He was always active in church work and in Bradford he had been an elder for several years. In politics he was a Liberal.A most highly respected resident of the district and an exemplary citizen and church man, his very sudden passing has been a great shock to his family and friends.Mr. Bateman is survived by his wife; three sons and two daughters, namely, Mrs. John Clubine (Constance) of Winnipeg, James of Bradford, Mrs.James Watt (Margaret) of Hamilton, Thomas of New York, N.Y., and Gordon of Bradford; eight grandchildren, Peggy and Ronald Clubine, William and David Bateman, Michael Watt, Lynne and James Bateman (New York), and Reginald Bateman; and one sister, Mrs.George Simpkin Annie) of Toronto. Another sister, Mrs. Sawyer (Florence) and an infant brother, Ross, predeceased him.The largely attended funeral was held from his late residence yesterday afternoon with services in charge of his minister, Rev. F. G. MacTavish. The pallbearers were two nephews, Bruce Sawyer and Kenneth Ralston, with Lorne Fines, John Armstrong, Joseph J. Wood and Herbert Hodgson.
