Description : With the death of Daniel Blake on May 20, Bradford lost a great educator and an active member of the community.A special prayer of remembrance was spoken for the 66-year-old man at an early June meeting of the Simcoe Roman Catholic Separate School Board. His teaching career began in 1938 in Brethour, Ontario, where he taught for a year-and-a-half.From there he went to Gordon Bay in Parry Sound District, and first came to the South Simcoe area in 1941.He taught grades 1 through 8 at a one-room schoolhouse in Ansnorveldt in the Holland Marsh for 18 years. In 1959 he started teaching at St. Mary's Queen of Martyrs School in Bradford. The school population there grew rapidly, necessitating the building of a new Catholic elementary school. In 1961 Dan Blake was named principal of the newly-opened St. Charles School on Simcoe Road on the outskirts of town. Not only did Mr. Blake provide leadership for teachers and students of the school, he designed the school building, which then included a remarkable feature in that it boasted a real" Kindergarten. He also designed the four-classroom addition built onto the school in 1967 when enrollment numbers again prompted expansion. The large Simcoe Roman Catholic Separate School Board was formed in 1969 taking in many smaller school zones including Bradford and West Gwillimbury schools. It fell to principals such as Dan Blake to reassure parents and teachers that their particular needs would still be recognized in the county-wide board."We recognized that as a board if we were to operate a good system we'd have to recognize the strength of the local communities and the knowledge of local principals. We were fortunate to have men like Dan Blake who knew the community well" said current board director Bill Bolger in an interview this spring.Mr. Blake's contribution to Bradford didn't remain solely in the field of education however. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and financial secretary to the fraternal organization for more than 20 years. He also became chairman of the group and was made an honourary member this year.Parishoners of Holy Martyrs of Japan knew him as an active member who fulfilled many duties behind the scenes. When the Bradford Library Board was formed in 1955 he played an important role as secretary-treasurer and for the past three years worked as chairman of that board.Dan Blake is remembered not only by his wife Eleanor and children Louise John Eileen Theresa Dorothy Anne and Edward but also by many other children in Bradford whose lives he touched in some significant way.
