Description : On May 30, 1969, the Holland Marsh community of Ansnorveld lost one of its oldest and most esteemed residents in the sudden passing away of Mr. Jacob Vandergoot at the age of 80 years. He was born Feb. 17, 1889, in the town of Heeg in the Netherlands where on May 17, 1919, he married Eelkje Sybesma. During the first years of their marriage they worked a dairy farm and in 1929 Mr. Vandergoot came to Canada and resided at Wallaceburg and Burlington, and came to the Holland Marsh in 1935, where they joined others of the early settlers. They had two children (Wilma) now Mrs. S. Oosterhuis born in Holland, and Ted born in Burlington, Ont. On March 6, 1937, Mrs. Vandergoot died which left the family motherless. Ted was at that time only 2 years old. Mr. Vandergoot carried on a widower until he married Anna Nauta from Denver, Colorado, U.S., on April 6, 1947.Although Mr. Vandergoot was retired some 10 years ago, he being in good health usually put in a fair day's work on the farm of his son until a heart ailment slowed him down and finally on May 30, he suddenly passed away. He has been a life-long member of the Christian Reformed Church, and has served as an elder for many years. He had many friends in the community. This was evident on the afternoon of June 2, when funeral services were held at the church and so many came to pay their last respects. As his remains were laid to rest, one could not help but be reminded that life, like an ever-rolling stream, takes all sons away. Another Holland Marsh pioneer has left our ranks. Another fine sincere Christian went to his eternal reward. Blessed are those that are in the Lord, for their works shall follow them.
