Description : Born in Bradford in March 1859, son of Donald McNiven, a merchant tailor of this village.Mr. McNiven began newspaper work in Ontario, then went to western Canada where he worked on the Winnipeg Free Press, the Regina Leader, the Vancouver World, and the Victoria Daily Colonist. He served as member of the B. C. legislature, later becoming Fair Wage Officer at Ottawa, then Deputy Minister of Labour for B. C., retiring from this position in 1931.Surviving are his widow, a son and daughter, three sisters, Mrs. J. Tipping of Alberta, Mrs. F. Laishley and Miss Jessie McNiven of Barrie, and one brother, John McNiven of Virden, Man.

When a young man, he took up residence in the Canadian West and was a successful farmer in the Brownlee district for many years, latterly being one of the most active and progressive businessmen of that town. He was prominently identified with municipal and political affairs and served his constituency as a representative of the Conservative party in the Saskatchewan Legislature.He is survived by his wife and family, his mother, Mrs. William Lilly Beeton, three brothers and three sisters, viz.: Edgar and Lloyd of Beeton; Kerwood of Port Colborne; Mrs. W.T. Baker, Elmvale; Mrs. R. Law of Toronto, and Mrs. Willard Barton, of Pickle Crow Mine.Interment in Moose Jaw Cemetery.
