"The most surprised winner at the Bradford District High School Commencement, Friday was Anne Saint. Only two award winners had not been announced before the ceremonies. Miss Saint won one of these awards - the Student Life Cup. It is given to the student completing Grade 12 who has made the most worthy contribution to school life. In addition to her many other activities, Anne is the Witness correspondent for the high school. A big winner at the Bradford District High School commencement last Friday was Jacqueline Kulha. She won the J.C. Wood Scholarship of $300 for the highest aggregate in six Grade 13 subjects. In addition, she took the Municipality of Bradford prize for the highest standing in Grade 13 and the science prize for the highest aggregate in tow Grade 13 sciences. Miss Kulha is seen here holding the J.C. Wood and Bradford prizes."
"Rosemary Fennell, daughter of John and Marietta Fennell, Bradford, received her diploma in nursing from Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology, Royal Victoria Hospital Campus, Barrie. Miss Fennell has accepted a position at Blind River General Hospital.
"Scores of friends, relatives and politicians, undaunted by Sunday's rainy weather, gathered to honor Gwen Kilkenny, Bradford's Citizen of the Year for 1975. During the afternoon, the Community Centre was filled with well wishers who have known Mrs. Kilkenny and her husband Keith over the years and many of whom she had helped in her long association with the town. Chamber of Commerce President George Allison acted as the master of ceremonies for the informal program. In all, 10 speakers took the floor to express their appreciation for Mrs. Kilkenny's work with the Canadian Cancer Society, Trinity Anglican Church, and her willingness to help anyone in need. Mr. Allison presented Mrs. Kilkenny with a silver try honoring her as the Bradford's top citizen. His presentation was followed by a presentation of flowers by Mrs. Marion Folliot, a good friend of the Kilkenny family. Mrs. Folliot praised Mrs. Kilkenny for her unselfish work in Bradford."
"Bradford councillor Fred Cook has been transferred out of the intensive care unit of York County Hospital after suffering a mild coronary April 6. Mr. Cook is now on the medical floor and is progressing. He was taken to Newmarket by ambulance following a mild heart attack. The attack aggravated his diabetes condition. Mrs. Cook told The Witness that her husband is feeling better but it will be a while yet before he is released."
"Bradford Public School did very well last week as both the boys and girls teams won the area five baseball championships. "Fred Cook, a man who for many years was a social and political influence in Bradford, died last Thursday in York County Hospital at 73. Mr. Cook was admitted to the hospital April 6 suffering from a heart attack. Funeral services were held in Trinity Anglican Church, Bradford, on Monday afternoon with the Rector, Rev. Jack House and Bishop Hunt, a lifelong friend of Mr. Cook's, conducting the service. Hundreds of friends and associates gathered in the little church on Church St. that Fred Cook served so well. Mayor Joe Magani led a delegation of members of council and the town administrative staff. Many officials representing the various surrounding municipalities also attended the special funeral service. During his 73 years, Fred Cook's life revolved around the town of his birth, Bradford."
"Somewhere in Bradford there is an unidentified man who may have saved the lives of a CNR railway crew on board a southbound freight train that plunged off the line and did over $1 million damage behind Hardee Farms during the storm last Wednesday night. Morris Sims, A CNR spokesman, told The Witness that a mystery man tried to warn the train's engineer that 100 feet of track had been washed out by the storm. Mr. Sims said the man tried to warn the engineer with a flashlight but the engineer couldn't understand the signal. The spokesman added the engineer slowed the train from its regular 50 miles per hour to 20 just to be on the safe side. Even though the train did run off the track at the reduced speed, Sims said the man probably saved the crew's lives by his action."
"Mike Kilkenny called his baseball career to a halt in 1973 after a squabble with the management of the Cleveland Indians, but he may be on his way to the major leagues again. Mike, who was raised in Bradford, told The Witness that a successful year with the Senior Intel County Baseball League's London Majors has drawn scouts from the big leagues south of the border to take a look. Mike went on to say that his season's statistics have aroused interest. So far this year he has won and finished each of the nine games he started and has 130 strike outs in 85 innings."
"A surprising number of people living in and around the Bradford area don't even know the town boasts a flourishing public library. Tell them that it's situated right across from the IGA and they'll be even more astonished. But, with a membership of better than 1,150 and still climbing, reading is obviously a popular activity in Bradford, and for that, book-lovers and those who only use library facilities now and again, can thank Library Administrator Gertrude Melbourne, assistant Amanda Kneeshaw and library secretary Susan Klop, all of Bradford."
