Charlton was burned to death in his wrecked car after he lost control on Highway 400 near the King-Vaughan town line. After colliding with another car, his vehicle crashed through a fence into a field and burst into flames.The 44-year-old Ontario Provincial Police officer with the Bradford detachment for the past four and a half years was returning home alone from his brother's home in Port Colborne where he had left his oldest son, Dale.Charlton resided on Thornton Ave., Bradford. He is survived by his wife, Marion; two sons, Dale and Paul; his mother, Bessie of Huntsville; brothers, Claude of Huntsville and Ross of Port Colborne. On June 8, Constable Charlton was one of eight members of the O.P.P. who received long service medals in a ceremony at headquarters in Barrie. A member of the force since May 1952, Charlton had been stationed in Thornhill, Huntsville, Bala and Bradford.He spent most of his career on traffic although while in Huntsville he served many years as court officer.Constable Charlton rested at the Lewis Funeral Home until Tuesday when services were conducted from Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bradford. Interment was in Hutchinson Memorial Cemetery, Huntsville.
