Description : Although during the past year Mr. J. Franklin (Frank) Houghton of Newton Robinson had been in poor health, there was no indication that he might not live for some time, and his passing on Wednesday, March 6, was most unexpected and came as a shock to his family and friends.Mr. Houghton, who was born on January 4, 1891, the son of the late Alfred Houghton and Ellen Meher Houghton, spent his boyhood in the Pinkerton and Newton Robinson district, attending public school there. He continued his education at Beeton Continuation School and Alliston High School and then took a teacher's training course at the Model School in Orillia, after which he taught school near Stouffville before going to Western Canada, where he taught for about four years before returning to the farm at Newton Robinson.In February, 1922, Mr. Houghton married Mina Harvey, who survives him, with their family of one daughter, Gladys (Mrs. Earl Bell), and three sons, Ralph of Markdale, Alan on the home farm, and Ted of Toronto; three brothers, Sam, Elgar and Charles, and one sister, Mrs. W. Jessop. Three brothers and two sisters predeceased him, namely, Robert, William, Norman, Laura (Mrs. M. West) and Lois (Mrs. Henry Harvey).Mr. Houghton took an active part in church, community and municipal affairs. He was a member of Newton Robinson United Church and an elder of that church for a number of years. He served as superintendent of the Sunday School and for some time was teacher of the young men's Bible class. Since the time of Church Union until his retirement in January he served as Recording Steward for the church.In fraternal work he was a past master of Manitoba Masonic Lodge, No. 236, G.R.C., Cookstown, Past Secretary of Georgian Masonic District and Past Grand Steward.Mr. Houghton was assessor for the Township of Tecumseth for several years and was a member and secretary-treasurer of Tecumseth Township School and Area Board. He resigned from this position in June of last year.In 1957 Mr. and Mrs. Houghton retired from their farm to make their home in the village of Newton Robinson.The funeral was held from Newton Robinson United Church on Saturday, March 9, with the services being conducted by his minister, Rev. R. N. Jackson. Interment was in Newton Robinson Cemetery.The pallbearers were Messrs. Ben Steers, Russel Copeland, Lloyd Coborn, Jackson Glassford, John Robinson, Vernon Connell.
