The Bradford Witness decided to release a series of articles from local townspeople on the history of certain events in Bradford and West Gwillimbury's time. This week, the history of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, which also marks its centennial year, is the topic.

"Bond Head's Pioneer Parade last saturday, July 1, was another example and proof of the fact that enthusiasm and willing workers can produce what money expenditure cannot. The Bond Head workers for the parade, and other events, did not have big financial resources but they did have a wealth of initiative, enthusiasm willingness to work, and a determination to do credit to Bond Head, and they most certainly accomplished the latter. That parade, and other events of the day, made July 1, 1967, red letter day for Bond Head." ...

"At 2 p.m., on Saturday, October 7, a weekend which will long be remembered, began for the residents of Newton Robinson and the Newton Robinson community, when friends of former years came to celebrate the village's Pioneer Family Days.
The activities for the celebration were introduced with a parade, which assembled a Poole's garage, and was led by two pipers, Paul and Marilyn Moir of Cookstown, up the hill and into Lloyd Coburn's orchard, which was prepared in readiness for celebrating the occasion." ...

"Jack and Diane Kooiman and family recently moved into a new home on the 11th Concession, and found the perfect way to both celebrate Canada's birthday, and beautify their property. The three Kooiman sons, their friends and girl friends came up to Bradford West Gwillimbury for the day, and planted blue spruce and maple trees along the property's edge/
Their reward was a barbeque, followed by fireworks. And on Sunday, the Kooimans will be holding their first annual family reunion, with family members from as far away as Kingston coming up for the weekend.
A birthday, notes Jack, is a special thing. "It only happens once a year - and your 125th is a wonderful day!"

"Friday, June 30th, Midnight, the Centennial of Canada's birthday was welcomed bu the ringing of all the church bells and fireworks. There was quite a crowd of people on the street in Centennial costumes. This proves the point that we are proud to be Canadians. Many thanks to Rev. Passerby and the Fire Brigade Control Blazes at Home of Mrs. Geo. Mapes

Fire which is thought to have started from a spark from a freshly lighted stove in the summer kitchen of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo Mapes, almost completely destroyed the summer kitchen (a frame extension to the main building), together with many kitchen utensils, grocery supplies, electric washing machine and other household articles, about 6.30 a.m. Friday.

Mr. Mapes had just kindled the fire in the summer kitchen and was in the adjoining room about five minutes later when he heard a sound beyond the door which he thought to be the family cat prowling about there. Upon opening the door leading to the summer kitchen, however, he was met by a sudden burst of flame which enveloped him and scorched his hair and whiskers.

Mr. Mapes rushed outdoors, shouting "Fire!" Mr. Harvey Aikens, his nearest neighbour, already up but not completely attired, heard the shout and at once made all haste to the fire hall, where he rang the fir alarm bell and then started the engine of the fire truck and got it on its way, picking up members of the fire brigade along the route.

In the meantime, Mr. Newman, proprietor of Bradford Dairy, who was passing on his delivery route when Mr. Mapes called, went to the latter's assistance. At this juncture a pail or two of water probably would have quenched the blaze, which appeared to be confined to a small space between the stove and wall of the summer kitchen. No pail was available, however, and the blaze made rapid headway during the very few minutes of delay. Mr. Newman then procured the garden hose, attached them and played water on the house until the arrival of the fire brigade, when the blaze was soon under control.

The summer kitchen was destroyed and all contents. The dining room was badly damaged with water and goods stored in the room above were destroyed. The repair work to be done will be considerable because as well as fire and water damage to the rear wing of the building the whole house was badly smoked. The loss is largely covered by insurance.
