Beloved wife of Gordon Malcho, dear mother of Don and his wife Rhonda and predeceased by Dr. Thomas Malcho. Dear grandmother of Thomas, Ryan, Murray and Hayley. Friends called at the Lathangue & Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 649 Centre St., Mount Albert. Funeral Mass was held at St. John's Chrysostom Churcy, Newmarket, Thursday, June 5, 1986 at 9:30 am. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, Thorold.

Description : One of Bradford's most active and well known women, Dorothy "Dode" Marks died August 17 in York County Hospital in Newmarket. She was 68. Mrs. Marks was born in the home she lived in most of her life the daughter of Walter Reeves, a Bradford police officer for 20 years, and Sadie Saint. She was educated in Bradford attending both Bradford Public School and Bradford High School after which she worked for a short time in the Stein Furniture Factory which stood on the property now occupied by Toby's Restaurant. In 1930 she married Harvey Marks and spent the next few years raising three children Noreen (Hodgson), Beverley (Sanders), and Bill. She also had seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. An active woman Mrs. Marks was a member of the Women's Institute and also enjoyed bowling tennis badminton and baseball. She worked off and on for The Witness for 25 years often working well into the night organizing subscriptions. A tireless worker she was never heard to complain according to co-workers. Mrs. Marks was a member of the community centre board from its inception in 1956 until 1974 running for no wage the concession booth. According to former board member and co-worker Joe Magani, "Dode and Ted Dow ran that thing all year and the only compensation they got was a steak dinner once a year. For almost 20 years they kept that arena out of the red and that's a fact. Our expenses for running the arena were paid by the proceeds of that booth." A descendant of Bradford's pioneer families Mrs. Marks had a thorough knowledge of the history of the area and provided The Witness with many of the historical photos used in the Yesterdays column. Many of those same photos were used in the Bradford Centennial Book of 1957. Funeral service was held Saturday August 19 in the chapel Lathangue & Skwarchuk Funeral Home. Pallbearers were James Church, Jack Church, Gordon Church, Robert Watson, Kenneth Saint, and Bill Enwright. Burial took place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Description : Early last Friday evening a 'phone call from Toronto informed Bradford friends that Herbert J. Mason had suffered a stroke at about 11 a.m. and was still unconscious. Later that evening he passed away.Since a serious illness a few years ago Mr. Mason's friends had noted with sadness that he had not recovered his former vitality, but he retained his ready smile and jovial wit and his apparent high spirits often covered the fact that he was far from a well man. He never slackened the speed at which he lived. His energy seemed limitless and he was going almost constantly. Every Friday afternoon he came to the family home at Brittania Farm and returned to the city Sunday evening, but he loved the farm and often returned during the week. Thursday afternoon he spent here. Friday morning he got into his car in front of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Passers-by heard the car horn blowing and going to investigate found him. He was moved to hospital but never regained consciousness.Born in Toronto, Mr. Mason was a veteran of World War I and was one of the Dumbells who entertained Canadian troops overseas, and later entertained the home folk after their return.Widely known in advertising circles, he was the Toronto representative of the Walker Press. Prior to joining Walker Press, he was with Reliance Engravers Ltd.A past governor of Gyro International, he was active in Gyro Club work, and was a member of the Toronto Advertising Club.Mr. Mason first became intimately associated with Bradford following the death of his wife's uncle, Mr. Albert Scanlon, when the family acquired the local properties. Within a few weeks his friendly disposition and jolly good humour had won him the friendship of residents in the town and country. He was at home wherever he went. Presiding with dignity at a club meeting, a joke in the back shop, or a cheery laugh with the housewife in the kitchen were all enjoyed with equal zest. He was Bert" to everyone and he received a glad welcome everywhere because his heart was gay and his friendship sincere.He is survived by his wife the former Margaret Lee.The funeral was held in Toronto on Monday afternoon with services conducted by the former Anglican Church rector here Rev. H. G. Blake. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery Toronto."

Description : Mr. Ralph Matthews' very sudden death, as the result of a heart attack, shortly after arriving for his day's business at Holland River Gardens Co. Limited on Wednesday morning, June 27, has left a vacancy in his home, in his church, among the Holland Marsh people, and among his many friends in Bradford. His cheerful disposition and friendly smile had made him a friend to all who knew him. Mr. Matthews was born in Holland, and emigrated to this country thirty-one years ago. Before leaving Holland he became engaged to Elsie Horlings and the following year she came to Chatham, Ontario, where they were married. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews established their home in Windsor and there their two daughters, Henrietta (Mrs. Sidney Van Dyke) of the Holland Marsh, and Jeanne (Mrs. Michael Havinga) of London, Ontario, were born. In August of 1946, when Bradford's first vegetable packing plant, Holland River Gardens Co. Limited, was opened, with his brother-in-law, George Horlings, then the vice-president and general manager, Ralph Matthews resigned his position as foreman in an industrial plant in Windsor to join the company here. His home was on the Holland Marsh. His church was the Holland Marsh Christian Reformed Church. His friendships were among the members of that congregation and few weddings from that church were complete without a reception following at which Ralph Matthews was master of ceremonies. But his friendships were not confined to his Canadian fellow countrymen. He was an enthusiastic bowler and was a member of the Bradford Men's Bowling Club, where at the annual closing social evenings he was always an asset as a leader. His friendships knew no barriers of race or creed. All good people who knew Ralph Matthews were pleased to call him friend. He is survived by his wife and his two daughters. Two sisters and two brothers reside in Holland and three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Matthews returned to their native land and visited their relatives there. Though his immediate family did not follow him to this country, his family relationships were numerous in this community by his marriage into one of the pioneer marshland families here. His funeral was from the Holland Marsh Christian Reformed Church with his minister, Rev. P. Lagerwey, conducting the services. Six nephews, namely, Wm. Winter, Gerald Verkaik, Harry Horlings, Richard Hyma, Louis Tamminga and George Hulsman were the pallbearers. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bradford.

Description : Death came with startling suddenness last Wednesday morning to a well known Bradford resident, Mr. John Maurino. Mr. Maurino was very seriously ill last October and for a time it was feared that he would not recover from two thrombosis attacks. But he amazed his family and friends by apparently making an excellent return to health. He was warned by his doctors that he should not exert himself, but having led a very active life these instructions were given little heed as soon as he felt well again and last Wednesday morning he decided to cut some grass beside the house. He collapsed while at this task and was unconscious when Mrs. Maurino reached his side. He lived but a few minutes.Born in Turan, Italy, over 77 years ago, Mr. Maurino lived in his native land, and in France, until coming to the United States at the age of 27 where his first employment was as a chef at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. A year later he came to Toronto where he had the same employment at the King Edward Hotel. For a time he was a butcher in Toronto, then, deciding to be a farmer, he came to the farm on the fringe of the marsh 43 years ago, which he later sold to the late Mr. Peter Catania, and which is still the Catania home. When he left that farm in 1918 he bought the farm and home, the latter now the property of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Yeomans, from the late Mr. Skinner, and the family took up residence in Bradford. Three years later he sold this property to the late Mr. Earl James and built the present home on Holland
Street west.Mr. Maurino was married in Toronto 47 years ago in St. Patrick's Church to Mary Cavallo, who, with their family of three sons and three daughters, survives him, namely: August of Toronto; Mrs. James V. Catania (Aida), and Frank of Bradford; Mrs. Bolley (Laura) of Guelph; Mrs. C. Clark (Lena) of Sudbury; and Leo of Bradford. Two sisters, one in France, and one in South America also survive. Mr. Maurino was a devout member of Holy Martyrs' Church, Bradford.Very energetic and youthful looking, Mr. Maurino was supposed to be living as a retired farmer during the past ten years, but his energy did not permit him to rest and he usually was busily employed. He was cheerful and smiling and had many friends who mourned his sudden passing.The funeral was held from Holy Martyrs' Church on Saturday morning with services in charge of Rev. F. R. McGinn. Two of his grandchildren, Vincent Catania and Laurene Catania, the latter at the organ, as well as the church's Dutch choir, assisted with the Requiem Mass. Interment was in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bradford.The pallbearers were Messrs. F. Magani, Fred Doane, Leo Catania and Peter Siervogel, all of Bradford; A. Bidini of Toronto and Bruno Cavallo of Sudbury.
