July 24, 1992 Death Frances Reid dead at 67, by Cindy Lonergan Frances Reid, a resident of Bradford West Gwillimbury for over 20 years, passed away suddenly at her home, Tuesday, July 24, at the age of 67. Reid was elected to council in 1982, 1985 and again in 1988. . . .Reid was discovered Tuesday night by her only son,Walter. . . . Reid was predeceased by her husband Walter White Reid. Parents are Elaina and the late Michael Kachura and sister of Mary and Michael of Ottawa. Friends called at the Lathangue & Skwarchuk Funeral Home and a mass was held at Holy Martyrs of Japan Church. Interment was held at Notre Dame Cemetery in Ottawa.

Description : Widow of the late George Reiley and mother to Mrs. Fred Brown (Annie), Mrs. Percy Filday (May), Mitchell, Mrs. Albert Wood (Sarah), Alex, Clarence and Josephine died in her 69th year. Rev. H.G. Blake conducted the service, interment in St. Paul's Cemetery.
Description : "Reginald Kuzyk was 30 years old, and an employee of the department of Highways, back on October 15th, 1954, when Hurricane Hazel hit. The storm brought torrential rains and flooding. Dams burst, and homes were swept away in the floods. A total of 81 people lost their lives in Ontario. The floodwaters had washed onions from Holland Marsh fields and heaped them on the highway in "gobs.... I never seen so many onions in one place. They were all over the ground, and everywhere." He also remembers seeing two homes, which had drifted on the floodwaters until they washed up next to the highway. By the time Hazel blew itself out, more than seven thousand acres of farmland on both sides of the 400 were under water, covered by a lake more than 7' deep in places. George Sadovchuk's described the Marsh after Hurricane Hazel as "it was just a lake. It was very impressive to see all that water where once was viable land... I was just amazed at the destruction that took place." Relief efforts brought the homeless into Bradford, to the Town Hall, where they were clothed and fed by volunteers. A total of 25 pumps took about 4 weeks to drain the fields, at a peak pumping 220,000 gallons per minute. But it would take months to clear the debris and repair the damage. Seventy families - 350 men, women and children - spent the winter that followed in a trailer park, set up by the Rotary Club on the site of the Bradford Arena. The sky was appropriately grey, for Sunday's historic tour of the Holland Marsh. The tour not only commemorated the 200th Anniversary of Yonge Street, but also the 42nd anniversary of Hurricane Hazel."
"'What for?' That was the thought of uppermost in the minds of those who attended the Remembrance service at Bradford's Royal Canadian Legion Hall on Sunday afternoon. Chaplain Major E. Jankowski of Canadian Forces, Base Borden, posed the question in his address to serve as the theme in reflecting upon those Canadians who fought, were wounded, and gave their lives on the field of battle.He reminded those assembled in the Legion hall that what we enjoy in the way of freedoms and privileges as Canadians are the result of sacrifices suffered on our behalf. In remembering the 330,000 Canadian dead and wounded in the wars, he urged that we pray that such a sacrifice will never be asked of us again. He summed up his thoughts by quoting an inscription in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa:"They are too near to be great. But our children shall understand where and how our fate was changed and by whose hand." This thought was carried outside as wreaths were placed at the cenotaph by representatives of various groups.
