Description : Cookstown and vicinity lost a well known and highly repected resident on Saturday, March 5, 1955, when Mrs. Vivian Beatty passed away suddenly at her home in Tecumseth Township.Mrs. Beatty was born in August, 1873,at Cloverhill in Essa Township. She was the former Mary Elizabeth Patricia Martin, eldest daughter of the late Joseph Martin and Sarah McCellan. In her early life she was a dressmaker, making friends far and wide through her congenial disposition and love of music. Following her marriage on November 7, 1906, to Vivian Beatty, she resided at
Lot 20, Con. 14, Tecumseth Township, until the time of her death.To mourn her loss , she leaves besides her husband, one daughter (Edith) Mrs. Allan McLean of Fergus; one son, Walter, at home; two grandchildren, Beatty and Margaret McLean, and two brothers, William John and Joseph Willis, both of Toronto. Three sisters predeceased her.She was a life-long member of Bradens's and Cookstown Presbyterian Churches and was an active worker in all social circles, being instrumental in organizing Ross' Social Group, of which she was a past president.The funeral service was held at the Hughes' Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 8, with Rev. George Moore and Canon Chaperlin in charge, and interment was in the Anglican Church Cemetery.The great number of floral tributed bore mute testimony of the high esteem in which she was held in the community. Included in the floral offerings were wreaths from the Presbyterian W.A., Thornton L.O.L., Cookstown and District Lions Club, Cookstown Curlers, Ross' Social Group, teachers and pupils of Ross' school, and from many friends and relatives.The pallbearers were I. Apperley, C. Ramsay, B. Nixon, N. Campbell, W. Nevils and A. Gilroy. Flowerbearers were W. Lorne, N. Nevils, C. Nevils, D. Wares, B. Dermott, K. Dermott, E. McFadden, R. Campbell, E. Marquis, J. Murray, A. Sutcliffe, E. Carr, E. Fildey and W. Milligan.Friends attended the funeral from Collingwood, Meaford, Elmvale, Barrie, Bradford, Brampton, Toronto, Fergus, Tottenham, Alliston, Everett, Agincourt, Richmond Hill, Huntsville, Englehart, Shelburne, Grand Valley, Bond Head, Thornton, Schomberg, Mansfield, Angus and Port Credit.

Description : The death of a well known and highly respected Gilford district man, Mr. Wilford George Neilly, occurred at Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, on Friday, March 11, following a short illness.Born in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, Mr. Neilly came to Gilford district with his family when a young boy and attended school at Gilford. As a young man he began farming in the Gilford district and had remained there all of his life, taking an active part in the affairs of the community.Mr. Neilly had served as school trustee and as secretary-treasurer of Gilford School Board from 1933 to 1938. He was very active in the work of Gilford United Church where he was an elder from 1932 until his death. He gave valuable leadership in the Sunday School of Gilford church and for twenty-five years, from 1918 to 1942, he served as superintendent of that Sunday School.In 1910 he married Martha Steele, a daughter of a well known Gilford family, in Toronto. Mrs. Neilly survives him with their family of two sons and two daughters, namely, Margaret, Elmer, Ross and Winnifred.The funeral was held from his late residence to Gilford United Church for service on Monday, March 14. Rev. Harold Sanders, his minister conducted the services and interment was in St. John's Presbyterian Cemetery, Coulson's Hill.The pallbearers were relatives and neighbours of the deceased, namely, Ronald Neilly, Lou Neilly Jr., Norman Neilly, Elmer Rothwell, George Nesbitt and Bill Kell.
