Community : Other - Bradford Street : Lot : Concession : 0 Description : Former Bradford District High School industrial arts teacher Don Ray died last week after an operation to remove a brain tumor.Mr. Ray, 58, taught at Bradford High from 1969 until 1981.He had been battling cancer of the lymph glands for seven years. Mr. Ray was operated on for a brain tumor at Toronto General Hospital - an operation which was thought to be a success - but lapsed into a coma two days later.He never regained consciousness and died on Tuesday, March 23 at 10 p.m.After teaching industrial arts to grades 9 through 12 at the old Bradford District High School (now Fred C. Cook Senior Public School), Mr. Ray taught woodworking in the new Bradford High until his retirement last year.School vice-principal Bill Perry commented, Mr. Ray was a dedicated teacher who was not only an expert craftsman but a warm and caring person. Students who studied with Mr. Ray not only learned their craft but also a sense of responsibility and a knowledge of how to deal with problems." He is fondly remembered for his collection of amusing stories of his students excerpts of which were especially popular during the assembly held for his retirement.A resident of Cookstown during his career at BDHS Mr. Ray enjoyed curling ice fishing and sports.He coached the BDHS softball boys team for eight years leading the team to six consecutive York-Simcoe championships.He began his teaching career at Holland Township School in Markdale moving on to Centre Grey District High School in Markdale and Grey Highlands Secondary School in Flesherton.After his retirement he lived in Durham Ontario.Donald Eoin Ray leaves a wife Elsie and six children.A funeral service was held last Friday at the McCullouch Funeral Home in Durham."All of us who knew Don Ray have been touched by a warm wonderful and positive person. He will be greatly missed but a part of his caring spirit will remain with us always. He was a true teacher and a great friend to many of us" Mr. Perry said."
