Evans (1876-1950), a descendant of one of West Gwillimbury's early pioneer families, held various public offices in that municipality over a period of forty years.He was the son of Zachariah Evans, who for over twenty years was clerk of West Gwillimbury Township Council. Upon the latter's death in 1906, Edgar was appointed to the office left vacant by the death of his father. He held that office until 1919 when he was elected to the Ontario Legislative Assembly. From 1919-1923, he represented the constituency of South Simcoe in the United Farmers of Ontario government, led by the Honourable E. C. Drury. He was defeated in the provincial election of June, 1923, and it was not until 1929 that he again returned to the public office.At that time he was elected councillor for the Township of West Gwillimbury, and the following year he was elected reeve. For fifteen years he served in this capacity, coping with the problems peculiar to the depression years, the Holland Marsh development years, the Second World War years. He retired from public life in 1945.E. J." as he was commonly known lived the greater part of his life in the farm where he was born - Lot 14 Concession 9. In 1947 he sold this farm and he and Mrs. Evans the former Ida Kneeshaw also a descendant of pioneer stock - retired to Newmarket. His death occured there three years later in December 1950.One daughter Mrs. Earl Bowles continues to reside in West Gwillimbury. Another daughter Marion lives in Toronto and a son Elven has a business in Cartier."

Community : Other - Bradford Street : Lot : Concession : 0 Description : Eva Marion (Sunny) Evans, who had been a resident of Bradford for the past 42 years, died in Toronto Wellesley Hospital Wednesday, Dec. 13 after a short illness.She was born in Hamilton 66 years ago, the daughter of the late Ernest and Mabel Peacock. She came to Bradford when she married Charles T. S. Evans in 1930 and resided at 124 Church St.Surviving besides her husband are four sons, Tom of Bradford; Dr. Jim of Kimpese, Zaire; Robert of Bradford, and Richard of Toronto; one brother, Dr. Harry A. Peacock of Hamilton, and a sister, Mrs. R. L. (Helen) Cassels of Burlington. Five grandchildren also survive.Mrs. Evans received her education at Ontario Ladies College in Whitby and Victoria College in Toronto. She was a member of the Bradford United Church, the United Church Women and the IODE. She served several terms as president of the UCW and regent of the IODE. She was also president of the Hospital Auxiliary and did volunteer work at York County Hospital.Funeral services were conducted in the Bradford United Church Saturday, Dec. 16 with Rev. Robert Chapman, Dr. Harold Vaughan and Rev. Donald Lute officiating.
