"Plans for the Bradford Snowarama are quickly shaping up as organizers distribute pledge forms, and snowmobilers line up sponsors for the 100-mile ride slated for Sunday, February 5. The Ontario Society for Crippled Children is coordinating the event for the fourth year with the help of local snowmobile clubs, and service clubs involved with the Easter Seals campaign. The society has set a goal of $1 million for the Bradford Snowarama and 17 other similar rides to be held throughout the province. "Things are looking good right now for the Bradford Snowarama," said Don Hart, supervisor of service club relations for Crippled Children. "We're optimistic that everything will go well, if the weather is good." The Bradford and District Snowmobile Club will blaze the trail which begins at Varley's Marina and follows a route north from Bradford along the Schomberg River to Lake Simcoe, following the eastern shore of Cook's Bay as far as Snake Island, crossing over to Innisfil Beach. It continues north to Big Bay Point and heads for the northern terminus at Kempenfeldt Bay. The return route parallels the west coast of Lake Simcoe, and winds through Big Bay Point, Innisfil Beach, Gilford, and back to Bradford and Varley's Marina. More than $50,000 was raised last year by the Bradford Snowarama, and organizers hope to top that amount by a wide margin this year. Whipper Billy Watson, a regular at the snowaramas and a Bradford resident, has helped recruit an impressive line-up of snowmobilers for his hometown ride."

"The Gay Sixties held their final Euchre Night of the season at their hall on Frederick Street last Friday. The climax of the evening was the quilt, afghan and grocery draw. Shown with the quilt, won by Diane Beauca of Newmarket, who was absent for the draw are (from left) Gay Sixties president Irene Dow, Bertha Langford, who performed the drawing, and three of the ladies who made the quilt, Eva Wright, Irene Turner, and Harriett Sturgeon. Mrs. Dow expressed thanks to everyone who helped and took part in making the six Euchre Nights a success."

"Professor Henry Day, who initiated much of the work in the marsh, operated the Kingwilbra Gardens beside Bridge Street. Tom Fuller Sr., who submitted this week's photo, was one of the workers on the marsh for the professor. Mr. Fuller recalled working for 17-cents an hour and then getting a rather substantial raise to 20 cents an hour. The work crew included Arthur Taylor, Jack Geddes (killed in action during the Second World War), Wilbert Mulliss, Bruno and John Carvalko, Frank Maurino, Herb Taylor, Homer and Howard Henbest, Gordon McKelvie, Bob Edney, Charles Hansford, Joe Sangdrige. "Dr. John R. Brown, a professor at the University of Toronto who studied the effects of pesticides on workers in the Holland Marsh, died Saturday at the age of 57. In April this year Dr. Brown warned than an important (missing part of the article). Dr. Brown qualified as a medical doctor in London, England, in 1953. He received a PhD in applied physiology. After coming to Canada in 1959 he lectured at the University of Toronto in science, environmental health, and industrial health. Dr. Brown was blind in one eye since childhood and became almost totally blind in 1969, but he continued to work with the help of his wife, Helena, and son, David Bartholomew. He was the author of four technical books, president of the Health League of Canada, and chairman of the national committee of employment for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind."

"Marking Wilbert 'Wibb' Orr's 30 years of safe school bus driving, a celebration was held at Parkview Transit recently. In photo above, Mr. Orr (wearing the hat) stands in front of his first school bus in 1947. Sharp-eyed readers will also spot Jim Thompson, formerly with the Bradford police department. At right, Wib tries out a reclining chair which was given to him by fellow drivers, as his wife, Jean, and Ted and Doug Brown of Parkview Transit look on. Wibb also received an engraved gold watch from Ted and Doug."

"Visitors from as far away as Idaho came to the open house at the Muck Research Station in the Holland Marsh last Friday. A steady stream of farmers, growers, salesmen and students toured the nine-acre site loaded with exhibits and test crops. The research station has served the area since the late 1940's, testing various crops, fertilizers, and chemicals used on muck crops. The station is headed by senior muck crops specialist Matt Valk, with Edo Knibbe as the agricultural technician, and staff members Fred Weening, Dave Walton, Eleanor Wall and Maureen Evans. The annual open house was blessed with warm, sunny weather."

"Following an accident on Wednesday, April 14, on Highway 88, west of Middletown Rd., a car driven by a Bradford man went into the ditch after police say he tried to pass a car which had stopped to make a left turn. A vehicle driven by Giovanni Capociama, 65, of R.R. 1, Bradford, was travelling west along Highway 88 and had slowed to turn left onto Middletown Rd. According to police, a second westbound car attempted to overtake Capociama on the left, and skidded into the ditch on the west side of Middletown Rd. The driver and passenger of the second vehicle, Christopher J. Fawns, 17, of Bradford, and Una Fawns, 16, sustained cuts and bruises. Mr. Fawns was charged by Provincial Constable Lorne Yakiwchuk of the Bradford detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, with careless driving and improper passing."
