Dr. Jim Evans

Dr. L.H. Campbell graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1892, with the M.B. degree from Toronto, and the M.D. and C.M. degrees from Victoria University. He began practicing medicine in Bradford in 1893. Built his house on John Street in 1902. He was a star member on the Bradford Lacrosse team, and lead them to victory over Barrie many times. He also played hockey, football, cricket, and many other sports. He was also a member of the Board of Health and was a High School Trustee.

A summary of an interview with Dr. William C. Little. He is being interviewed by Jack Coleman and Norbert Moran at the Simcoe County Archives. The interview talks about his family's history, his path to becoming a doctor, working in Camp Borden during World War Two, working with veterans and his career after the war. "Bradford doctor G.L. Blackwell was honored last Wednesday at the annual meeting of the York County Hospital for his years of service as chief of staff of the hospital and on the board of directors. Dr. Blackwell received a large painting as thanks for his 12 years as medical chief of staff and nine years on the board. Dr. Blackwell retired from the positions at the end of 1975. The presentation was part of the annual meeting which was held to elect directors for 1976 and to receive the annual reports for 1975."

Miss Sinclair’s House is a mid-block building located on the south side at 92 Holland Street West. It was built in the 1890’s in the Italianate style. Miss Bertha Sinclair lived in this house for many years. When she died, her nieces Kay and Isabel (daughters of Robert Spence) moved into the house. They were hairdressers. Isabel later moved and part of the house was rented to George and Ethel Stewart. The building was eventually sold to a real estate agent. The office of Dr. Fitzsimmons was also here at one time. Next to this structure was a vacant lot belonging to the Sinclair family. Many years ago there was a Temperance Hall and a church located there.
The two-storey, rectangular, main building has a single-storey, rear addition, a symmetrical façade, and a moderately-pitched, hip roof with a central chimney. The grand, Italianate scale is reflected in the large window openings, high floor to ceiling heights, and the large, 6/6 sash windows. There are deep, projecting eaves with ornately-decorated, paired cornice brackets and ‘false quoins’ (wood detailing meant to resemble masonry). The window cornices are exaggerated. According to the 2000 inventory, the stone foundation, wood frame construction, horizontal, wood-sided exterior finish (resembling masonry), and painted, exterior, wood trim are maintained well. A record book of births that occurred in the Bradford area. The record covers births attended by Drs. B. L. Sinclair and Ray Judge from 1938 - 1947 and was recorded by Mae Fuller. Fuller was an area midwife and also ran a "nursing home" out of her home on Church Street.

Photograph of the home of Dr. Frederick Coney Stevenson at 136 Barrie Street, c. 1905. In the 1940s it was added to, the facade changed and turned into a nursing home. This picture was given to Lew Campbell by Ken Stevenson, Dr. Stevenson’s grandson. Lew Campbell and his family lived at 129 Barrie Street, across the street from this house . Dr. Stevenson can be seen in the photo (sitting on the lawn).

One of Campbell's strongest childhood memories was seeing Dr. Stevenson collapse while cutting his lawn in 1927. He was pronounced dead when Dr. Lewis H. Campbell arrived minutes later.

Cairn reads: "Sir William Osler, Baronet, was born here on July 12, 1849 - A Great Physician - Erected by the Medical Historical Club of Toronto"
