Event Date : Tuesday, January 12, 1982 Event Type : Death Municipality : Community : Alliston Street : Lot : Concession : 0 Description : The flag at Bradford District High School flew at half-mast last week as the staff and students mourned the death January 12 of geography teacher Don Burtt.Mr. Burtt, 48, succumbed to cancer at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston.The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation and the administration at BDHS have established in his memory the Don Burtt Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund for an award to be presented annually.Mr. Burtt was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of the BDHS geography department for 13 years, also teaching math and history.Prior to coming to BDHS, Mr. Burtt taught in the United States and Vancouver.He was active in the school's extra curricular activities - curling in particular - and was noted for his excellent field trips all over Canada.He was a dedicated teacher who had excellent rapport with staff and students.Mr. Burtt was back in school for half-days prior to the holidays and was looking forward to returning full-time in January.But he was stricken again after visiting his brother and family in Chicago. His brother and niece were with him when he died.In accordance with his wishes, no funeral service was held.
