"Joy Anne Kell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Kell of Gilford, graduated from the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology as a respiratory technologist on September 17. Joy Anne has accepted a position with St. Joseph's Hospital in Guelph."

"After several years of hard work by many people in the Holland Marsh, the senior citizens building in Ansnorveldt was officially opened in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday. King Township Mayor Margaret Britnell, after complimenting the people of the marsh for their efforts, cut the ribbon to open the club. Secretary of the club, John Van Dyke said the need for a community centre had been growing for several years. In the summer of 1972, Mr. Van Dyke said, a group of marsh citizens decided to organize a senior club. For a while the members used a church hall for meetings but it became apparent this would only serve as a temporary measure, and plans for a building were started. A building fund raised $8,000 in the tiny community and by the fall of 1976 the shell of the building had been erected. More fund-raising efforts through the winter brought the total donations up to $17,000, and grants from Wintario and the federal New Horizons programs added $26,700. Mr. Van Dyke thanked York MPP Bill Hodgson for his efforts, and York-Simcoe MP Sinclair Stevens for helping the club get registered as a non-profit organization."

"The Newton Robinson anniversary fair on Saturday featured something for everyone. There was a large crowd out to enjoy the many tings a country fair has to offer many people enjoyed the display of artifacts of a bygone era, and Gwen Taylor was on hand at the display to point out things of interest to the visitors. Women at the tea tables were busy serving tea and coffee, giving many people a chance to renew acquaintances. The history of the Newton Robinson United Church was also on sale, along with hasti-notes with the church's picture on the front."

"Some of the queen contestants in the International Harvest Festival assembled on the weekend, representing many of the ethnic groups in the Bradford area. The festival is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 5 and 6. Front row: Penny Ackerman, Stella Balon, holding a Ukrainian doll, Shelley Rainey. Rear: Eileen Ferragine, Debbie Riffert, Phylomena Moniz, Michele Wierenga, and Oksana Luczka. Also entered are Karen Brinkos, Christine Jolivel, and an unnamed Canadian girl."

"This week's old photo is the first of a series submitted by Dorothy Marks of Bradford, a life-long resident of the town. The photo show the Jack Cook farm implement display in 1911. Many area farmers took part in an annual parade which began at the CNR railway station in those days. Jack Cook was the father of the late Fred C. Cook, and Mrs. Tom Gardner. Mrs. Marks identified the lead driver as Tom McCracken. She was also able to identify last week's photo of the hearse, with funeral director Ben Collings as the rear of the carriage, and James Webb the driver. Mr. Collings' establishment stood where Bill's Jewelry is currently located, the far right building in the photo. Harvey Curry of 70 Holland Street and Jim Catania of 176 Church Street also identified the Collings hearse and building. Mr. Catania said another photo in the Witness (September 21) showed him and his father, Peter, and brothers John and Leo harvesting in the 1930s. The boys picking carrots in the picture were members of the Horton family."

"The established church in Canada is nothing to crow about, according to the new minister at St. John's Bradford Presbyterian Church and Second West Gwillimbury Presbyterian Church. Student minister Bill Lennips, 39, sees a lot wrong with the organized church and he wants more emphasis on the age-old teachings of the Bible. The new minister laments over the church's loss of a leadership role in the issues of the day. Mr. Lennips is replacing Rev. Harold Heustin, who retired earlier this year. He is no stranger to the Bradford area, having worked as a Christian Reformed lay evangelist in River Drive Park from 1969 to 1974. He left the Christian Reformed Church, feeling there was undue pressure to have children attend Christian separate schools. He and his wife Betty have six children: Cindy, Jim, Martin, Robert, Douglas, and Billy. Mr. Lennips says the church should be more active and its ministers less distant from the public. He said new policy committees that have been established by Canadian churches - including the Presbyterian Church - are a step toward a more active role for the church and an impact on world events."

"Kenneth Seim of Toronto, a former resident of Bradford, submitted this week's photograph. It shows the 35-piece Canadian Army Service Crops Brass Band performing in Bradford during "Three Gala Days" sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Sunday, July 31, 1962, Mr. Seim thinks the band came from Camp Borden. "This used to be quite an occasion. We all used to look forward to it," says Mr. Seim."

"The Toronto Telegram, now defunct, ran this week's photographs in the 1950s, showing the Holland Marsh harvest. Even then the marsh was prized for its productivity and the great opportunities for employment it provided. The photos are included in a collection at the Simcoe County Museum in Midhurst."

"Peter and Josefina Catania, on their way to Brazil to teach and conduct research, recently visited Peter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Catania of RR 2, Newmarket, and Peter's brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Betty Catania. Mr. and Mrs. Catania will teach for two years at the Universidade Federal de Paraiba in Jona Pessoa. Dr. Peter Catania will study solar energy at the university and Dr. Josefina Catania will teach psychology, as part of a project of the Canadian government. Peter was born and raised in Bradford and he attended St. Mary's separate school, Aurora High School, the University of Waterloo, University of Edmonton, and University of Regina. Josefina was born and raised in Cebu City, The Philippines. The couple had two children, Carleon Miguel, 5, and Alaine Mia, 1.5."

"The mayor of all the people in Bradford for many years, Joe Magani (left) has received a great deal of well-deserved tribute for contributions. The latest is a photo portrait donated by the Chamber of Commerce, represented by president John Gaus (right). The portrait will hang in the town hall when the renovations are completed."
