"This week's photo, submitted by Jim Catania of Church Street, shows the Bradford Brass Band in about 1928, on the Speziali Farm on Bathurst Street, now known as Jamaica Farm. "The Bradford Lions Club went over the top in the Lions Pool project with the airplane draw last September. The club presented the balance of $50,000 to Bradford Mayor Roy Gordon at a special meeting Monday. "Frank Tunney Jr., recreation director of the Bradford
Community Centre, died last Thursday of cancer, He was 38. Mr. Tunney leaves his wife Cathy and five children, Michael, 9, Anne, 8, Bridget, 6, Marty, 5, Tricia, 3. Funeral service was held Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church in Toronto. Mr. Tunney, the son of wrestling promoter Frank Tunney Sr., took over as manager of the Bradford arena in May of 1973. Before that, he was an instrument technician for Orenda Engines in Malton and a member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Department. He continued working at the community centre up to one week before finally losing his battle with the disease. Long-time family friend Sandy Hudson said, "He had that characteristic that he would not let this get him without a fight." Under his direction, the Bradford Community Centre became one of the finest and most smoothly run buildings in the area. "He was the backbone of this place," said Don Harrison, assistant manager of the arena. "Frank was the kind of guy who would help anyone who needed it." Last year Mr. Tunney also took on the position of Recreation Co-ordinator, a job he tackled with his customary enthusiasm. During the summer months, he managed the Bradford Lions Pool. An active member of the Bradford Rotary Club, Mr. Tunney was a "very involved member," according to club president Bas Visser. "He had a lot of hope and energy. You really had to admire him." Mr. Tunney was also a sports enthusiast. He coached the Allenby Electric novice hockey team, and formerly wrote a weekly curling column in The Witness. Last year he donned his skates to play for the Bradford Oldtimers hockey team. Saturday during the service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the church was jammed with family, friends, sports and television personalities."

"Mayor Roy Gordon will be on hand tomorrow (Thursday) at 10 a.m. at Stedman's on Holland Street west to "re-open" that store in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. New owner Cliff King took over the Bradford commercial landmark February 7 from Ron Bannerman, after the store had been in the Bannerman family for more than 30 years. Mr. King, a native of Fergus, was a district manager for Stedman's before buying the Bradford store. He and his wife, Monique, and their five children, Kathy, Christine, Kim, Ricky and Nicole are going to buy a home in Bradford, but Mr. King reports they have been so busy with the store that they haven't found the time. Monique, Kathy and Kim help in the store, along with employees Mary Saint and Audrey Stevens. Mr. King is closing at 4 p.m. this afternoon to get ready for the big opening festivities that include prizes of two antique radios and special sale items. He said that he appreciated the assistance he received from Mr. Bannerman when he first took over the store. Mayor Gordon will be presented with a special pair of gold scissors for the ribbon-cutting."

"Barbara Catherine Melbourne, 20, of Bradford has graduated from the Sheridan College School of Nursing. A total of 115 nurses will take part in the convocation ceremony at Glenforest Secondary School in Mississauga on Friday. Barbara completed a two-year course to acquire nursing registration."

"The 1977 version of the Salad Festival will be held from July 10 to July 17 this year, publicity committee chairman George Allison announced this week. Planning had been underway for almost two months and several new events, as well as the popular regular events will be in the program. The midway, the beef barbeque, cabaret and salad feast will return this year. Mr. Allison stated that a joint meeting of the management committee and representatives of the various participating groups was held recently. Rick Wright, last year's salad feast chairman, has resigned stating that other commitments would make his participation difficult. Lyn Bowmaster has been chosen as chairman for this year's festival. Mrs. Bowmaster said the task will be made much easier as a result of the detailed records maintained over the last two years. She said she is looking forward to receiving the co-operation of the groups who participated in last year's events."
