Description : One of the oldest and best known residents of this community passed away last week on Saturday, August 11, in the person of Marshall Booker Hipwell of Bond Head. He had just passed his 84th birthday, having been born at Newton Robinson on August 6th, 1872. He lived all his life in this district, first at Newton Robinson and then at Bond Head, where he took over the General Store that had been operated by his father after the latter's death in 1888. He ran this store until 1934, when he was succeeded in the ownership by his son, M. C. (Ted) Hipwell. In 1914, he was appointed Postmaster of the village of Bond Head and held that position until 1952, when because of failing sight he resigned the office.A staunch Conservative in politics, Mr. Hipwell always took the greatest interest in all affairs relating to the welfare of the community and district. He was a member of the Orange Order and a life member of the local lodge No. 1053, Bond Head, of which, too, he was the treasurer for a number of years. Mr. Hipwell was a familiar figure at the July 12th district walks." In religion he was brought up a Methodist and at the formation of the United Church he became a member of that body.Marshall Hipwell was married twice; first to Miss Kate Loblaw of Alliston by whom he had three sons and two daughters: Errol (who predeceased him) Ted Eric Thera (Mrs. Camplin) and Glenna (Mrs. Graham). His second wife was Mrs. Sadie Pollock of Cookstown who survives him.The funeral service took place on Tuesday August 14th in the United Church at Bond Head the address on that occasion being given by the Rev. C. R. P. Hearn Rector of Trinity Anglican Church Bond Head a friend of the deceased for over thirty years. The Rev. W. J. Burton of Kettleby and the Rev. F. Newell of Cookstown also took part. The interment was in the family plot at Newton Robinson. After the religious service was over the members of the Orange Order carried out their obsequies at the grave of their departed brother. The pallbearers were Wm. Gould Jack McLean Wallace Reynolds W. K. Orr Alonza Feaver and Fred Cook.Mr. Hipwell will be greatly missed in our community. Always genial with a bright word for all those with whom he came in contact it will be a long time before we will recover from the sense of loss we feel. The sympathy of all in this district goes out to his widow and his sons and daughters in their bereavement."
