"Rosemary Fennell, daughter of John and Marietta Fennell, Bradford, received her diploma in nursing from Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology, Royal Victoria Hospital Campus, Barrie. Miss Fennell has accepted a position at Blind River General Hospital.

"Leo Catania (centre) accepts congratulations from his wife, Wilma, and his former boss, Jack McInally, at his retirement party last week. Mr. McInally holds a plaque with model inspection tools which was one of the gifts Mr. Catania received. He was director of the farm products inspection service of the provincial Ministry of Agriculture."

"'What for?' That was the thought of uppermost in the minds of those who attended the Remembrance service at Bradford's Royal Canadian Legion Hall on Sunday afternoon. Chaplain Major E. Jankowski of Canadian Forces, Base Borden, posed the question in his address to serve as the theme in reflecting upon those Canadians who fought, were wounded, and gave their lives on the field of battle.He reminded those assembled in the Legion hall that what we enjoy in the way of freedoms and privileges as Canadians are the result of sacrifices suffered on our behalf. In remembering the 330,000 Canadian dead and wounded in the wars, he urged that we pray that such a sacrifice will never be asked of us again. He summed up his thoughts by quoting an inscription in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa:"They are too near to be great. But our children shall understand where and how our fate was changed and by whose hand." This thought was carried outside as wreaths were placed at the cenotaph by representatives of various groups. "Bradford Mayor Roy Gordon (left) presents Charles Evans with the Queen's Jubilee medal for his many years of service to the town. A fervent royalist, Mr. Evans thanked former clerk-treasurer Margaret Davey, and former assessor Fred Collings for their support. Mr. Evans, a former Reeve of Bradford, is a Queen's Counsel, and practices law with the firm Evans and Evans."

"Visitors from as far away as Idaho came to the open house at the Muck Research Station in the Holland Marsh last Friday. A steady stream of farmers, growers, salesmen and students toured the nine-acre site loaded with exhibits and test crops. The research station has served the area since the late 1940's, testing various crops, fertilizers, and chemicals used on muck crops. The station is headed by senior muck crops specialist Matt Valk, with Edo Knibbe as the agricultural technician, and staff members Fred Weening, Dave Walton, Eleanor Wall and Maureen Evans. The annual open house was blessed with warm, sunny weather."

"Timmy and Tammy were in Bradford last week to generate support for the Snowarama to be held February 13 from Varley's Marina. From the left are Bradford Mayor Roy Gordon, former mayor Joe Magani, Timmy (Kevin Collins of Orillia), Tammy (Patty Doak of Newmarket), Whipper Billy Watson, and Aurora Mayor George Timpson. The Snowarama is in its third year, and it's purpose is to raise money for crippled children in Ontario. Whipper Watson has been involved in the Ontario Crippled Children's Society for the past 28 years."

"The Annual Junior Plowing Match and Coaching Day was held last Thursday at the farm of Harold Bell, Gilford. Participating in the day were Marie Thomas, Susan Dawney, Neil Thomas, John Robinson, and Tom Robinson, all turning in a worthy performance in their respective classes. These young people were coached throughout the day by Keith Robinson and Bill Thomas, under head coach Bill Timbers, former world champion plowman. Queen of the Furrow, Susan Gilmore, coached by her father, Earl Gilmore, was also plowing in preparation for future competition. Jack Campbell and Frank Cowan, also members of the South Simcoe Plowmen's Association were on hand to assist with the most successful day."

"Plans for the Bradford Snowarama are quickly shaping up as organizers distribute pledge forms, and snowmobilers line up sponsors for the 100-mile ride slated for Sunday, February 5. The Ontario Society for Crippled Children is coordinating the event for the fourth year with the help of local snowmobile clubs, and service clubs involved with the Easter Seals campaign. The society has set a goal of $1 million for the Bradford Snowarama and 17 other similar rides to be held throughout the province. "Things are looking good right now for the Bradford Snowarama," said Don Hart, supervisor of service club relations for Crippled Children. "We're optimistic that everything will go well, if the weather is good." The Bradford and District Snowmobile Club will blaze the trail which begins at Varley's Marina and follows a route north from Bradford along the Schomberg River to Lake Simcoe, following the eastern shore of Cook's Bay as far as Snake Island, crossing over to Innisfil Beach. It continues north to Big Bay Point and heads for the northern terminus at Kempenfeldt Bay. The return route parallels the west coast of Lake Simcoe, and winds through Big Bay Point, Innisfil Beach, Gilford, and back to Bradford and Varley's Marina. More than $50,000 was raised last year by the Bradford Snowarama, and organizers hope to top that amount by a wide margin this year. Whipper Billy Watson, a regular at the snowaramas and a Bradford resident, has helped recruit an impressive line-up of snowmobilers for his hometown ride."
