Dear father of Evaleen of Islington, Joe and his wife Verna of Gilford, Francis [sic] and her husband Douglas Shaw of Barrie, Anne and her husband Nick Hurdman of Sudbury, Jean and her husband Robert KEffer of Bradford and Mary Lou. Dear brother of Eben Sawyer of Bradford. Dear grandfather of Tom and Janet Sawyer, Jennifer and Kevin Shaw, Philip, Nicole and Matthew Keffer. Friends called at the Lathangue & Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 30 Simcoe Street, Bradford. Service was held in the chapel on Monday, May 23, 1994 at 11 a.m. Interment at St. Paul's Cemetery, Coulson's Hill. Donations to the Gilford United Church would be appreciated.

ELLIOTT, IRENE LAURA - At the Penetanguishene General Hospital on Friday, May 27, 1994 in her 82nd year. Irene Lemire beloved wife of Edward Elliott and the Late Fred Morson. Dear mother of Gordon and his wife Elaine of Brampton, Doreen (Mrs. Raymond) McFadden of Markdale, Donald and his wife Mary of Oakville, Edith (Mrs. Henry Lepage) of Sans Souci, Margaret (Mrs Vern Hartley) of Penetanguishene and Fred and his wife Sandra of Bradford. Lovingly remembered by twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren. Dear sister of Emma Joyce of Florida, Marguerite Regimbald, Sylvio LEmire and Edward Lemire all of Ottawa and the late Oscar, Aurele, Armand, Lawrence, Valmore, Lucien, Gerald and Moise. Rested at the Penetanguishene Funeral Home, 155 Main St., Penetanguishene Sunday May 29th. Funeral mass was held on Monday May 30th. Interment St. Ann's Cemetery, Penetanguishene. Memorial donations to the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation, Diabeted Association or the Penetanguishene General Hospital would be appreciated.

Dear father of Ulf and his wife Helen, Finn and his wife Ellen, Lars and his wife Gail all of Calgary, Susanne and her husband John Stam of Gilford, Anette and her husband Dick Starm of Oakville. Also survived by 20 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 3 sisters in Denmark. Friends called at the Lathangue & Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 30 Simcoe St., Bradford. Service was held in the chapel on Monday, June 20, 1994 at 3 p.m. followed by cremation

McKinstry, Cpg. James G.

"James G. McKinstry was born in the town of Bradford on December 4th, 1884. He enlisted on December 11, 1915, into the 10th Royal Grenadiers, who were later absorbed into the 123rd Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 123rd served in Canada until they embarked for England, on August 8th, 1915. McKinstry served at Bramshott Camp and was confirmed in the rank of A/L Corporal, in 1916. He was appointed A/Cpl. in 1917. In early February, 1917, the 123rd Battalion served overseas in France and Flanders, as a Pioneer Battalion. McKinstry remained in England as a instructor, but was dispatched to the front one month later, as part of the Canadian Corps below Vimy Ridge. In October of that year, the Corps moved to Flanders to aid the British in their autumn offensive. The attack on Passchendaele Ridge took several stages to complete. Cpl. McKinstry was killed in action at Passchendaele on October 21st,1917, and is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, in Belgium. He was 31 years old at the time of his death. At the end of the offensive in November, the Canadian Corps had sustained 16,000 casualties.

Old convent demolished

"It's graced Barrie Street for over 118 years, but last week, the "Old Convent" met the fate it had evaded for so long and fell to the wreckers.
Built in 1876, as the home of attorney and Reeve of Bradford, John MacLean Stevenson, it was one of the few Italianate villa-style Victorian buildings left in Canada. ..."

Residents oppose street name changes

"It seemed like a reasonable idea, a good idea: in this, the 50th anniversary of D-Day, to recognize some of the municipality's most highly decorated veterans, by renaming duplicate street names in their honour.
The list of names, compiled by the Royal Canadian Legion with the assistance of Bradford West Gwillimbury Police Service researchers, included Gunner JohN Douglas Breeze, recipient of the Military Medal for bravery, and Squadron Commander Brad walker, recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
The idea was to honor the war veterans, while they were still alive; to eliminate the risk of confusion of street names in an emergency, by changing similar names; and perhaps, to untie the Municipality in a gesture towards its veterans.
Instead, it re-opened old wounds, and contributed towards new grievances. ..."

John Russell Morrison passed away suddenly at his home on Monday August 15, 1994. Born on January 21, 1906, he was the eldest son of Belle (Bartholemew) and Robert Morrison. He is survived by his wife, Florence Estie Cook whom he married on December 1, 1934. Dear father of Ruth and her husband Ted Lehman of Huntsville., Ronald and his wife Colleen of Tottenham and Gail and her husband Jim Coughlin of Barrie. Loving grandfather of Darlene and her husband David, Carl and his wife Sharon, Terry, Jackie and Russell Jr. Great-grandfather of Aaron, Nicole, Dustin and Jessica. He is also survived by six brothers and sisters. Stewart (Pat), Verna (Mrs. George Parr), Maurie (Mrs. Phil Reynolds), Frank, Dorothy (Mrs. Norman Slack) and Herbert. Predeceased by brothers Leslie (Johnny) Elgin, Robert and sister Venus. Rested at the Rod Abrams Funeral Home on Tuesday where a Masonic Service was held. Rev. Jim McLenaghen conducted the funeral service from St. Andrew's Presbyterian, Beeton. Honorary pallbearers were Clayton Heuchan, Arnold Rogers, Orville Hughes and Doug Jebb. Pallbearers were Jim Milligan, Bob Milligan, Mike McCarren, Don Doucette, Gerald Ramsay and Steve Porter. Flower bearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was laid to rest at St. John's Cemetery 6th Concession Tecumseth.
