The structure located at 98 John St. East was the home of the Collings family years ago. The large, two-storey, frame and stucco-clad house has a long shed at the back that was once used for automobile storage (and later as a utilities room). Before World War II, there was a small building used for repairs and a blacksmith shop located east of the house. Along the lane fence at the south end of the property was a large, one-storey building used for storing marsh hay. South of the main house was a cement sidewalk that led to Holland Street. There was a garden (and later, grass) on each side of the house. Originally, the family owned a horse stable located at 100 John St. East. Bill Peters and his wife were housekeepers for Ernie Collings Sr. when he lived here around 1907. Ernie owned marshland on the west side of the Holland River at the 10th Line. Years later the house was bought by James Armstrong and his wife Jane (Saint). Jim was a marsh hay worker and he owned land above the 10th Line on the west side of the river. Jim was an implement sales man on Holland Street (around the time of WWII) after marsh haying was finished. He also ran a garage at 11 Holland St East with Fred Gregory after Dennis Nolan closed his garage. Jim and Jane raised their daughters in this house. Daughter Shirley and her husband Bill Watson remained in the house after Jim and Jane died, but it was eventually sold. (1, 2)

It's not just the Home Depot now under construction and due to open this summer, the planned Loblaw and new LCBO outlet that will be built on Holland St. west of Melbourne Drive. It's not just the banners displaying the Town's official flower, the Black-eyed Susan; or the new Sesquicentennial banners for Bradford's 150th birthday; or the flowering beds, or the new additions to both High Schools. There is also the return of businesses seriously damaged by fire in 2006 - F.K. Textiles, the 88 & 11 Convenience Store, and Annit "a" Haircut - and a number of new stores and ventures that have opened, including Condy Books, on Barrie St. On top of that, a growing number of established businesses in the community are celebrating the success of their enterprises, with Anniversary celebrations - from the 1st Anniversary of Dutch Treats, the Dutch Store and Deli at 15 Holland St. east; to the 29th Anniversary of Joella's Jewellery & Gifts, 32nd Anniversary of Bradford Rental Sales & Service, to one of the oldest businesses in Town: Spence TIM-BR Mart, now in its 98th year of service. In this Sesquicentennial year, that's something to celebrate."
Description : These days, there are very few businesses that have been around for 100 years. The Bradford law firm of Evans and Evans is one of those few. Founded in 1894 by T.W.W. Evans, the firm was augmented by his sons, Charles and Brock in the 1920s. Today, "Evans and Evans' refers to grandsons Thomas and Robert. On Thursday, the law firm, which has been in the same building for more than 75 years, opened its doors to family, friends, clients and celebrated its first 100 years. There were photos on display that not only chronicled the history of the Evans family, but the history of Bradford and West Gwillimburry, from turn-of-the-century lacrosse teams, to Bradford's centennial celebrations in 1957, to the sod turning for the new library and West Gwillimbury Administration centre.

"Persons dropping in at the new West End Fashions store in the Anzil Plaza will have a warm smile and a cup of coffee waiting for them from Bette Hare. Mrs. Hare opened the store primarily to meet people. "I love meeting people," she said, "and you just don't meet people being at home, so I asked Len about buying the store and he said, 'Why don't you'" Len and Bette had operated a radio and television appliance store in town for 18 years, and after they finally sold out this year, Mrs. Hare found staying at home very boring. Operating her own store has been very exciting, and she doesn't mind the hard work."

"A pressure vessel manufactured by Bond Head Welding is seen here starting its route to Toronto. Weighing 18 tons and holding approximately 15,000 gallons the tank was ordered by B.P. Oil. It took two men four weeks to construct the vessel."

Description : Died at his home in Burbank, California. Husband of May McKenzie; father of daughter Frances, and brother of the late Mrs. Ruth Saint. The deceased was born in Bradford and was first employed in the butcher business by Wm. Davey. On Jan. 1, 1906, he bought the business from Mr. Davey but later that year sold to Mr. James A. Webb and left town. Mr. Archer was an outstanding athlete, and being a member of Bradford's famous lacrosse team, played centre field with such well known team mates as Jas. Webb, R. McKinstry and the late Dr. Campbell.
