Newmarket Metropolitan Railway

The Metropolitan railway was a streetcar project which was to extend up to Bond Head through Bradford. Newspapers reported in 1900 that citizens would welcome this track through the towns, although it was a costly endeavour:
"The residents of the north end of Newmarket are solicious for the continuance of the Metropolitan Railway track through to their quarter, and have called upon the Council to endeavor to get the company to perform the work."

It also presented issues with the town's current layout, hence changes had to be made:
"The contract for removing the Newmarket Exhibition buildings to the South of the track has been let by the Management Committee, and arrangements have also been made for the erection of a grand stand. With these improvements the local grounds will compare favorably with any in the county."

Railway Committee of the Privy Council

Article on the prices of oil rates and monopolies in regards to train service. The article mainly references the United States, yet the rate fluctuation greatly affected Canadian trains and oil service in the early 1900s.

"The Railway Committee of the Privy Council has come to the conclusion that the railways which have been discriminating in freight rates in favor of the Standard Oil Trust must lower the rates charged other American oil companies. This is a move in the right direction and it is hoped that now the octopus will be shorn of the power it has possessed for the past year to victimize the people of this country in the price of so important an article as oil, which is universally used. If this decision of the Railway Committee is an earnest of the intention of the Government to look after the people's interests it will give the whole country the highest degree of satisfaction."

Petition for the GTR

"The G.T.R. authorities will very shortly be presented with a numerously signed petition form the citizens of Bradford and neighborhood respectfully requesting that the midday passenger train going north be allowed to stop at this depot. The travelling public would find it a great convenience and there is every reason to believe that the railway people would also find ti to be a profitable piece of business in time."

G.T.R. Electric Head Lights

"The Grand Trunk Railway have made an important innovation by installing their passenger train locomotives with a electric light equipment. One of the large type of passenger locomotive constructed at the Point St. Charles works of this company has just been turned out from the shops and is now at work in Montreal and Portland night passenger service, which has, in addition to all the well known modern appliances of merit for the safety and convenience of train operating, a powerful electric lighted head lamp and a number of incandescent lamps, which have been placed in the cab of the locomotive for the purpose of lighting the steam and air pressure and water gauges..."

Civic Holiday

Article from the BRadford Witness in 1900 proclaiming the date of the August Civic Holiday. Municipalities were able to designate a date for the holiday at the end of the summer, and began around the 1850s in Ontario.

Armstrong, Eliza obituary

Description : On Friday last one of the pioneer settlers in this vicinity passed peacefully away in the person of Mrs. John Armstrong, relict of the late John Armstrong. Deceased was born on the 22nd of March, 1810, near the town of Killashandra, County Caven, Ireland, and with her parents came to Canada in 1831. Her maiden name is Eliza Magee. On the 14th of February in the following year she married Mr. John Armstrong, and shortly after settled on the south half of lot 12, in the 6th con. of West Gwillimbury, on the farm now occupied by Mr. Samuel Faris. Some years later Mr. Armstrong purchased, and for 38 years resided on the farm now owned and occupied by Mr. Jonathan Kneeshaw. In the summer of 1882 Mr. Armstrong departed this life and shortly after his widow took up residence in this village, and for the past 17 years has continued to reside on John st. A coincidence worthy of remark is that Mrs. Armstrong died on the same day of the month - 24th of August - as that of her husband who predeceased her just 18 years. Deceased who endured the hardships incident to pioneer life, enjoyed good health during most of her long sojourn upon earth. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and for many years was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church. Deceased died full of years and happy in the assurance of a blessed hereafter. Infirmities of old age was the cause of her recent sickness while resulted finally in her death. There was a family of nine children, seven of whom are now living, viz.: Mrs. Simon Armstrong, Toronto; Chas J. Armstrong, Bradford; John R. Armstrong, Ottawa; Mrs. Ingles, Wingham; Miss Martha Armstrong, Bradford; Mrs. B.L. Johnston, Toronto; and Mr. Allan Armstrong, West Gwillimbury. Miss Martha Armstrong resided with her mother and did the part of an affectionate daughter in making the declining years of her mother as happy and as cheerful as possible. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Old Kirk burying grounds, the remains being laid beside those of her husband. In the unavoidable absence of Rev. Mr. Smith, who attended the deceased during her illness, Rev. Mr. Whaley, of St. Helen's, Ont., conducted a short service at the house and in the church at the graveyard, also improved the occasion by preaching a funeral sermon in the Scotch Settlement church, immediately following the burial service. The sympathy of the whole community goes out to the family and all sorrowing friends in their sad bereavement.

Hockridge, John H. obituary

Description : Age: 64 years, 6 months. Died of Bright's disease. A carriage maker by trade. Born in Kilhampton, Cornwall, England, on March 1st, 1836, the eldest son of John Chedister Hockridge. Settled in Bradford in 1856, after first going to Bowmanville and Newmarket. Married Miss Elizabeth Ann Peat, of Bowmanville, in 1860, and he died on the day of their fortieth anniversary. Brother of Mr. William Hockridge, of Cobourg, and Mrs. McElwin, of Toronto, and has another brother and sister in England. Survived by his widow, and three children: Mrs. McKay, Mrs. Whiteside, and W.J. Hockridge. Interred at Mount Pleasant.
