Description : Early last Friday evening a 'phone call from Toronto informed Bradford friends that Herbert J. Mason had suffered a stroke at about 11 a.m. and was still unconscious. Later that evening he passed away.Since a serious illness a few years ago Mr. Mason's friends had noted with sadness that he had not recovered his former vitality, but he retained his ready smile and jovial wit and his apparent high spirits often covered the fact that he was far from a well man. He never slackened the speed at which he lived. His energy seemed limitless and he was going almost constantly. Every Friday afternoon he came to the family home at Brittania Farm and returned to the city Sunday evening, but he loved the farm and often returned during the week. Thursday afternoon he spent here. Friday morning he got into his car in front of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Passers-by heard the car horn blowing and going to investigate found him. He was moved to hospital but never regained consciousness.Born in Toronto, Mr. Mason was a veteran of World War I and was one of the Dumbells who entertained Canadian troops overseas, and later entertained the home folk after their return.Widely known in advertising circles, he was the Toronto representative of the Walker Press. Prior to joining Walker Press, he was with Reliance Engravers Ltd.A past governor of Gyro International, he was active in Gyro Club work, and was a member of the Toronto Advertising Club.Mr. Mason first became intimately associated with Bradford following the death of his wife's uncle, Mr. Albert Scanlon, when the family acquired the local properties. Within a few weeks his friendly disposition and jolly good humour had won him the friendship of residents in the town and country. He was at home wherever he went. Presiding with dignity at a club meeting, a joke in the back shop, or a cheery laugh with the housewife in the kitchen were all enjoyed with equal zest. He was Bert" to everyone and he received a glad welcome everywhere because his heart was gay and his friendship sincere.He is survived by his wife the former Margaret Lee.The funeral was held in Toronto on Monday afternoon with services conducted by the former Anglican Church rector here Rev. H. G. Blake. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery Toronto."

Description : Col. William Pate Mulock, grandson of Sir William Mulock and Postmaster-General for six years, and owner of the Newmarket Era and Express newspaper, died Wednesday at his home near Newmarket following a heart attack. He was 57. Ill-health forced him to leave politics in April, 1945, after representing North York as Liberal since 1943. He was in charge of Canada's mails during the Second World War and directed the special operations needed to speed mail to troops overseas. He made his first attempt to enter Federal politics at North York in 1930, but was defeated by the late T. Herbert Lennox. Four years later, however, he contested the seat in the by-election caused by Col. Lennox's death and piled up a majority of 3,678 - the largest in the history of the riding. He retained the seat in the 1935 and 1940 general elections. When he entered Mackenzie King's cabinet at the age of 43 he was the youngest minister. To some extent his political career ran parallel to that of his grandfather, who was Postmaster-General from 1896 to 1905. His maiden speech in the Commons drew wide attention and was heard by Sir William Mulock, probably the first time a grandfather was present when his grandson took the seat originally held by himself. Born into one of North York's best-known families, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Mulock, he was educated at Upper Canada College, the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Siberia, read law with Mulock, Milliken, Clark and Redman, and was called to the bar in 1920. He became a King's Counsel the same year he added M.P. to his name - 1934. During his administration, Canada's present air mail system was developed. When he was not at Ottawa, Col. Mulock divided his time between his law practice and his farm between Newmarket and Aurora. He had been in ill health for some months before his death and was confined to his home. Col. Mulock leaves his wife and two sons, William and Thomas.

Description : Friends here were shocked to learn of the very sudden death of Meryl Morris, former well known resident of Bradford. Mr. and Mrs. Morris and family left Bradford a number of years ago and have been residing in Willowdale, with Mr. Morris being employed in Toronto. He was returning from his work early last Thursday morning when in downtown Toronto he collapsed from a heart attack and died. The funeral was held on Saturday to Victoria Square.

Description : A West Gwillimbury Township son, and a brother of the Township's Reeve, Dr. Ernest R. Selby passed away at his home in Calgary on Friday last, June 17. Dr. Selby had not been well during the past several months, due to a heart condition, and the message informing his family here of his death was not entirely unexpected. Born on the Selby farm, lot 12,
Concession 9, West Gwillimbury, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Selby, Dr. Selby attended Bowles' school and Bradford High School before taking his medical course at Toronto University. After his graduation he specialized at Gravenhurst Sanitorium, St. Louis, and at the Mount Royal Hospital in Montreal, before going to Calgary where he established a practice. He was in Calgary about two years when early in the First Great War, 1914-1918, he offered his services to his country. At that time western Canada units were not being recruited and Dr. Selby came east and signed as a medical officer. During his term of military service he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and also won several medals for distinctive service. The was over he returned to Calgary and about two years later he married Laura McQueen of that city, who survives him, with their two sons, Dr. Raymond Selby and Bill Selby, both of Calgary. Also surviving are two brothers, Percy and Cyril Selby, both of Bradford; and three sisters, Mrs. Roy Kneeshaw (Mary) of Bradford, Miss Lena Selby, R.N., of Asbury Park, N.J., and Mrs. George Thomas (Stella) of Orange, N.J. Dr. Selby was a member of the Anglican church. He was a Mason, having joined Simcoe Masonic Lodge, No. 79, Bradford, before going to western Canada. He took much interest in the St. John's Ambulance Corps and had an outstanding record in instructing for this Corps. The funeral was from his home in Calgary with interment in that city.

Description : Joan Frances, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Compton of Bradford, to Kenneth Lawrence Pond of Toronto, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Pond of Simcoe, Ont. The wedding took place at Bradford United Church. Rev. F. G. MacTavish officiated. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Norma Compton, as maid of honour, and Misses Marilyn Ritchie of Bradford and Shirley-Ann Deyell of North Bay, as bridesmaids. Mr. Murray Pond of Simcoe was his brother's groomsman and the ushers were the bride's brother, Mr. Gordon Compton, of Bradford, and the groom's brother-in-law, Mr. Robert Crofoot of Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Pond, both of whom are graduates from Toronto University with the degree of B.A., will reside at 100 Sheppard Ave. E., Willowdale.

The wedding took place in the chapel of the Church of St. Barnabas, Toronto. Rev. H. G. Blake, rector of the church and formerly of Bradford, officiated. Mrs. Keith Collings of Paris, Ont., and formerly of Bradford, attended the bride. Mr. Keith Collings of Paris was groomsman. Mr. and Mrs. Veale will reside at Ajax, which is convenient to branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Rouge Hills where Mr. Veale is a member of the staff. The bride, who is a graduate nurse from the Toronto General Hospital, was honoured by her friends at several showers" of gifts before her marriage."

Description : The passing of William Henry Breedon at Toronto General Hospital on Friday, March 2, in his 28th year, was a sad loss to his family and to the community in which he had spent his life. The young man had not enjoyed robust health and it was known that an illness which normally would not be regarded as serious to many people might be very dangerous to him, therefore when he became ill with a heavy cold every precaution was taken and he was moved to hospital, but to no avail. He passed away within a few days. Born at Bond Head on September 29, 1928, a son of Nat and Mary Sutherland Breedon, William Breedon had lived all his life at Bond Head, as his parents have done. He attended school in the village and was a member of Bond Head United Church and took a great interest in the work of that church. In his home he was a devoted son.He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Jack and Joe, and a sister, Ann.The funeral was held from his late home on Monday of last week, with the services being conducted by Rev. R. Love, Minister of Bond Head United Church, assisted by Rev. Lee of Schomberg. Interment was in the Bond Head Cemetery. The pallbearers were William Brethet, Bud Brown, Brian Jackson, Leonard King, Wallace Reynolds and Wilson Stoddart. Beautiful floral tributes were received from Bond Head Church and Sunday School, Dunkerron Church, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Bond Head School, Dunkerron School, and community relatives, neighbours and other friends. The funeral was attended by friends from Toronto, Brampton, Newmarket, Gormley, Newtonbrook, Alliston, Bradford, Beeton and Schomberg.
