"MPP Art Evans presented Sid Gapp with a portrait of the queen to be hung in the Gay Sixties senior citizens' rooms at the old St. Mary's school. Municipal officials from West Gwillimbury and Bradford, and representatives of provincial and county senior citizens organizations, were on hand Sunday when the Gay Sixties held their official ribbon cutting ceremony."

"Bradford Salad Festival organizer Leo Kleiss said yesterday that pre-sale of tickets for the festival are going well and he expects that very few will be left by the time the festival gets underway. Advertising and community bulletins should bring people from all over Southern Ontario and the estimate is that up to 15,000 people will attend. Area motels and hotels have been booked for the past two months. Last week the Bradford Rotary Club issued a challenge to the Bradford Lions Club to participate in what should be one of the funniest moments of the festival - donkey baseball. The Lions have accepted the challenge and the event will be staged Sunday, July 18. In addition, the Big A Amusements will be opening their variety of carnival rides and games on Tuesday, July 13 to run through until the following Sunday at 6 p.m. Tickets for all the events including the teen dance, salad feast and the baseball games can be purchased at the Festival office in the old Bank of Commerce building at the corner of Barrie and Holland St."

"The town of Bradford bulged at the seams last week as an estimated 20,000 people jammed into the community to make an unprecedented success of the annual Bradford Salad Festival. From last Wednesday night, through Sunday, every event scheduled by the Salad Festival Committee surpassed organizers' highest hopes. Visitors and residents alike consumed hundreds of pounds of fresh salad, sliced their way through a ton of beef, sipped on soft drinks and other refreshments, danced til the wee hours of the morning, and generally paid tribute to the greatest growing area in Ontario."

The Bradford Witness decided to release a series of articles from local townspeople on the history of certain events in Bradford and West Gwillimbury's time. This week, the Holland River is the topic.

"No cause has yet been determined for a stubborn blaze which broke out in a house at 16 John Street East in Bradford last Tuesday.
The Bradford Fire Department was called out at about 4 pm to quell the blaze which broke out in a back apartment, occupied by Dick Gullinger.
Fire Chief Harold Boyd said the whole apartment was in flamed by the time the firefighters arrived on the scene, and there was no hope of saving it.
The back wall of the house was also badly damaged, and thick smoke made the rest of the house uninhabitable for the occupants of the other two apartments, John Faria Jr., and Louis Dasiba.
"It was a tough one to put out," Chief Boyd said, explaining there were many false ceilings in the old house which had to be torn away to get at the flames.
The chief estimated it took about three hours to put the fire out. The occupants managed to remove most of their belongings during the blaze, and there were no injuries. There has been no estimate of damage."

Article based on the event of Lukes' Flour Mill's recent fire on the early morning of November 19th, 1895. The mill was located on the far east end of Bradford, and was registered under the Patrons of Industry Warehouse and Shipping Company.

"The washed out bridge on Concession 14, West Gwillimbury, might have claimed the lives of two brothers, Eddie and Paul Renald. Going to the store at Fennells for groceries their car plunged into the swollen stream at the washout and was carried about 100 yards downstream and cast up into the bush a total wreck. The brothers smashed the windshield and managed to crawl out and reach land but one suffered a broken arm and both were badly bruised and cut."

"A cyclone, accompanied by torrential rain and some hail, wrought heavy damage on a comparatively small acreage of the Holland Marsh gardens late last Thursday afternoon. The storm struck in the Springdale area and while crops in general in that area took a terrific beating, about three or four growers, directly in the path of the about half-mile wide storm, suffered the heaviest loss." ...
