"Frank Tunney Jr., recreation director of the Bradford
Community Centre, died last Thursday of cancer, He was 38. Mr. Tunney leaves his wife Cathy and five children, Michael, 9, Anne, 8, Bridget, 6, Marty, 5, Tricia, 3. Funeral service was held Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church in Toronto. Mr. Tunney, the son of wrestling promoter Frank Tunney Sr., took over as manager of the Bradford arena in May of 1973. Before that, he was an instrument technician for Orenda Engines in Malton and a member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Department. He continued working at the community centre up to one week before finally losing his battle with the disease. Long-time family friend Sandy Hudson said, "He had that characteristic that he would not let this get him without a fight." Under his direction, the Bradford Community Centre became one of the finest and most smoothly run buildings in the area. "He was the backbone of this place," said Don Harrison, assistant manager of the arena. "Frank was the kind of guy who would help anyone who needed it." Last year Mr. Tunney also took on the position of Recreation Co-ordinator, a job he tackled with his customary enthusiasm. During the summer months, he managed the Bradford Lions Pool. An active member of the Bradford Rotary Club, Mr. Tunney was a "very involved member," according to club president Bas Visser. "He had a lot of hope and energy. You really had to admire him." Mr. Tunney was also a sports enthusiast. He coached the Allenby Electric novice hockey team, and formerly wrote a weekly curling column in The Witness. Last year he donned his skates to play for the Bradford Oldtimers hockey team. Saturday during the service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the church was jammed with family, friends, sports and television personalities."

Mr. Magani said he thought the gavel was given to him personally, but found out by reading the inscription that it was donated to the town. "The Djurgarden Mini-Midgets of Stockholm, Sweden arrived in Canada on Boxing Day to begin a five-game tour against Ontario midget hockey teams from Barrie, Cobourg, Oshawa, Bay Ridges, and Newmarket. For the 20 young hockey players and 14 adults who accompanied them, this was their first visit to Canada and an exciting opportunity to combine good, competitive hockey with lots of sightseeing. It was soon apparent, however, that the players were neither novices at hockey nor travelling. Despite the fact that the Swedish players were only 15 years of age (Canadian midgets are usually 15 or 16), the Swedes emerged from the five games with three wins, a loss, and a tie. The Swedes defeated Cobourg 6-4, Bay Ridges 5-1, and Newmarket 5-3. They battled Oshawa to a 4-4 tie and were upset by Barrie 7-3. Although they had never come to Canada before, the team has toured Germany, Finland, and Norway. Their experience showed."

"More than $1,700 in pledges was recorded at the ski and skate-a-thon Saturday, sponsored by the Gilford and District Lions Club at Ski Haven. It was estimated that Harv Speiran of Gilford was the oldest of the 100 participants. It was also he who chalked up the most money in pledges, over $300, while skiing more than 10 miles. He wouldn't reveal his age. A young bank teller, Kim Brown of Bradford, had $258 in pledges, the highest for the women. Participants came from Gilford, Lefroy, Churchill, Bradford, and surrounding districts. The even was held to raise money for the Lions camp for the deaf at Parry Sound and the camp for the Blind at Lake St. Joseph. Snow and ice conditions were not the best but they did not deter entrants from having a fun-filled afternoon. Many enjoyed making use of the facilities loaned by Ski Haven to the Lions Club."

"Elizabeth Willmot is a lover of old railway stations. For the past 10 years she has been travelling around the province collecting historical information and taking photographs of railway stations for her recently published book "Meet Me At The Station." "The book is a nostalgic approach to the old stations. It's not intended in any way to be a textbook," Mrs. Willmot explained in an interview. Recently, the McMichael Canadian Collection in Kleinburg featured an exhibit of photographs of Ontario railway stations from her book."

"Mayor Roy Gordon will be on hand tomorrow (Thursday) at 10 a.m. at Stedman's on Holland Street west to "re-open" that store in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. New owner Cliff King took over the Bradford commercial landmark February 7 from Ron Bannerman, after the store had been in the Bannerman family for more than 30 years. Mr. King, a native of Fergus, was a district manager for Stedman's before buying the Bradford store. He and his wife, Monique, and their five children, Kathy, Christine, Kim, Ricky and Nicole are going to buy a home in Bradford, but Mr. King reports they have been so busy with the store that they haven't found the time. Monique, Kathy and Kim help in the store, along with employees Mary Saint and Audrey Stevens. Mr. King is closing at 4 p.m. this afternoon to get ready for the big opening festivities that include prizes of two antique radios and special sale items. He said that he appreciated the assistance he received from Mr. Bannerman when he first took over the store. Mayor Gordon will be presented with a special pair of gold scissors for the ribbon-cutting."

"Arthur Evans' 17 years in the Ontario legislature-now coming to an end-were not without disappointments. The position of cabinet minister has always eluded the Simcoe Centre MPP, and he frankly feels it was because he supported the loser in the progressive Conservative leadership race of 1961. "Politics being what it is, I guess I could have been a cabinet minister if I had supported John Roberts. I supported Bob McAuley," Mr. Evans said in an interview. During that critical leadership race, John Robarts approached Mr. Evans for support. "He indicated to me that I would have a chance of getting into the cabinet if I would support him." ..."
