Veterans Dinner and Get Together

"Bradford Army and Navy Veterans had a fowl dinner and get-together in their new club rooms on the evening of Remembrance Day, Friday, Nov. 11th, when veterans and a few invited guests to the number of nearly forty, sat down to the wonderful repast provided. Before partaking of the meal two minutes' silence were observed in memory of comrades who fell in the Great War. After dinner Rev. C.H. Forth, who, it was announced, had accepted the office of Honorary Chaplain of the Bradford branch of the Army and Navy Veterans, occupied the chair, when a programme of short speeches and music was carried out. Reeve Nolan, who was one of those present, during his remarks, complimented the local Veterans upon the most able manner in which they arranged and carried out their big three days' celebration the past summer, and assured them that if they attempted another such affair in the future they would receive even a greater measure of support from the public of Bradford.
The Veterans are to be complimented upon the transformation they have made in the appearance of the large room above the Fire Hall, which they are now using as their club room. We would suggest that anyone who has an easy chair which they have discarded or put away in the attic to be forgotten, might get in touch with the Veterans, who could make good use of it in their club room."

"Charges of neglect have been laid against the mother of the 12-year-old girl who drowned in the Holland River on Monday, August 5, according to the Executive Director of the York Region Children's Aid Society, Donald Van Camp.
Eleanor Lowder, mother of Betty Lowder, the girl who drowned, has been charged under Section 40 part (1) of the Child Welfare Act which makes it an offense for anyone to leave a child unattended for an unreasonable length of time without proper supervision. Under the provisions of the act the maximum fine the court is able to impose in such a case is $200 and a maximum one year prison term.
Hearings on the charge will take place in camera on September 3 in Newmarket family court.
The surviving five Lowder children are in the care and custody of the Children's Aid Society, according to Van Camp. After the accident one of the children was in the care of relatives, according to him, but now all are with the society.
Any inquest into the drowning will have to wait until the charges have been taken care of by the courts, according to Dr. Robert Seaver, who is acting as coroner in the case.
"Its all up in the air right now," said Doctor Seaver, "any charges will take precedent. Until some of these things are straightened out," he said referring to the charges, "we can't go ahead." He is also waiting on further details on the accident to become available from the police and the autopsy report.
The possibility of an inquest will still be up in the air, according to Dr. Seaver, until it is decided if some particular aspect of Betty Lowder's death has to be "...brought out."
The police will only be acting as witnesses and assisting the Children's Aid Society in this case according to Deputy Chief Robert Hood of the York Regional Police. Police could have laid the charge against Mrs. Lowder, but they deferred to the Children's Aid Society in the case.
The drowning was the first case in which Bradford firemen were called to the Marsh area which recently switched to Newmarket for its fire protection. The Bradford department's answering of the call raises the question of the $800 charge which King Township is supposed to pay when the Bradford department enters King.
When asked about the fee and whether it will be charged, Bradford mayor Joe Magani replied, "If someone is drowning and we coulz be of some assistance, I don't think its a matter of dollars and cents."

"Late last Friday evening, March 18, a telephone call to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brown of Bradford, relayed the telegram from military authorities to Mrs. M. C. Vipond, conveying the sad message that her husband, Lt. Milton C. Vipond, 30 had died in Korea. Mrs. Vipond had been at the home of her parents since her husband left for Korea on March 1 of last year. In conversation with a member of the family yesterday morning The Witness learned that while Mrs. Vipond had had no further word from military authorities, according to radio and daily press reports, her husband lost his life in a building fire in the Canadian sector in Korea on Thursday night. The fire levelled a hut in the officers' lines in the matter of minutes. Seven other officers escaped unhurt from the blaze.Lt. Vipond, a graduate of Bishop's College, began his military career during the Second World War with R.C.N.V.R. He attended Bishop's College following demobilization and went on to take his Bachelor of Arts degree and entered first year medicine studies.He was commissioned in the Reserve Force while serving with the Stormont, Dundas, Glenngary Highlanders, of Cornwall, Ont. He was appointed to the Regular Army some time later and has served with the 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade in Germany, as well as on the staff of the Royal Canadian School of Infantry. Before joining the 2nd Battalion, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, he served with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment.Late last summer Lt. Vipond was appointed Education Officer of the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade.Lt. Vipond was married in Bradford on November 17, 1951, to Helen Brown, R.N., only daughter of Deputy-Reeve Thomas Brown of West Gwillimbury and Mrs. Brown. During Lt. Vipond's time in Germany his wife visited him there. He returned to Canada and was stationed at Grand Bend until March 1 of last year when he was sent to Korea for a year. At that time Mrs. Vipond returned to the home of her parents and at the time the message arrived notifying of his death preparations were being made here to welcome him home early next month.On September 20 of last year a daughter was born to Lt. and Mrs. Vipond, but the father was not spared to see little six-month-old Helen Lorraine.As well as his young wife and infant daughter, his widowed mother, Mrs. Laura M. Vipond, of Wales, near Cornwall, survives him.Many of his wife's friends here have met Lt. Vipond and regarded him very highly. His tragic and untimely death has aroused sincerest sympathy for his wife, who has always been one of the community's best loved daughters, his wee daughter and his mother."

Description : At home, in her 93rd year. Failing health for eight-ten years, which left her confined to her room for the previous two. Three sons and three daughters: Etta (Mr. B.B. Collings), Bradford; Melville G., Bradford; Norman W., Toronto; Beatrice (Mrs. Emerson Thorpe, Woodville; Ethel (Mrs. George Stewart), Bradford; and Eldon, Toronto. Sister to Mrs. Chisholm of Cleveland, Ohio (last of a family of seven). Predeceased by her husband four years previous, daughters Minnie (Mrs. C. Clappin) and Nell (Mrs. Jas. Balfour), and an infant son, George.
Born near Cornwall, Ontario. Family moved to Angus when she was young, where she met her husband, William G. Waldruff, to whom she was married for 68 years. Married in Allandale. Lived in Angus, Colwell, Barrie, and Allandale, coming to Bradford in 1901. Funeral from home by Rev. F.G. MacTavish of Bradford United Church. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Pallbearers (son-in-law, two grandsons, and three grandsons-in-law): Emerson Thorpe, Woodville; Norman E. Collings, Bradford; Orin Thorpe, Hamilton; Ken Blevins, Toronto; Gordon Crutcher, Thornhill; and Robt. Riddell, King.
