New Bond Head School S.S #5

The New S.S. # 5 West Gwillimbury School at Bond Head. This building was erected on the same property just south of the 80 year old school. The one-classroom brick structure, built by Contractor Wilfred Halbert from Thornton had windows all along the side facing the road. The students and teacher, George Pocock moved from one school to the other at the beginning of February 1954. An additional classroom opened on January 3, 1955 with Dawna Herard as the firs teacher.

Off to Brazil

"Peter and Josefina Catania, on their way to Brazil to teach and conduct research, recently visited Peter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Catania of RR 2, Newmarket, and Peter's brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Betty Catania. Mr. and Mrs. Catania will teach for two years at the Universidade Federal de Paraiba in Jona Pessoa. Dr. Peter Catania will study solar energy at the university and Dr. Josefina Catania will teach psychology, as part of a project of the Canadian government. Peter was born and raised in Bradford and he attended St. Mary's separate school, Aurora High School, the University of Waterloo, University of Edmonton, and University of Regina. Josefina was born and raised in Cebu City, The Philippines. The couple had two children, Carleon Miguel, 5, and Alaine Mia, 1.5."

"Oh! Canada" Official Languages Kit

"Oh! Canada" kit, distributed to primary school children in Canada (2.5 million), including in Bradford West Gwillimbury. It was a result of the Official Languages Act passed in 1969 and the Canadian government's efforts to work-out Canada's French/English history and identity going forward. The kit was created by Keith Spicer, Canada's Commissioner of Official Languages from 1970 - 1977.
