More than 100 delegates attended the district annual meeting of Simcoe South Women's Institutes last week at Alliston. Mrs. Russel Browning of Churchill headed the prize winners in the Log Book competition. Above are (left to right): Mrs. Gordon Mallion of Tottenham, who judged the entries, Mrs. Norman Baxter, Everett, third-prize winner, Mrs. Browning, and Mrs. William Sutherland, Bond Head, district history curator. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Canada.One warm evening in June 1939, the elementary school children and parents of West Gwillimbury drove to Alliston to see the Royal Couple on board the train as it passed through the little town. But the train did not stop and thousands of disappointed onlookers did not get a glimpse of the King and Queen. Engineer Harry Toman (brother-in-law of Herbert Bowles) was under instruction not to stop the Royal Train as it was late leaving the Toronto Station. At Midhurst, where 28 peoples were gathered, the train stopped to take on water supplies. King George VI stepped off the train to shake hands with the small group. One of those present was Edith Belfry, teacher of S.S. #9 Mount Pleasant. The Bradford High School students went by train to Toronto where they saw the Royal Couple riding in the Royal Car. The pupils had been given flags to wave and in some places the children put pennies on the railroad tracks.

A sewing exercise book that was owned and used by Lulough Kneeshaw (nee Latimer).

From the notes of donator June Chambers:

"I interviewed Edgar & Lulough not long after we moved to Bond Head. Edgar was easy with telling his stories, Lulough not so much..."
"Lulough Kneeshaw (nee Latimer) was born March 6, 1897. She grew up on a farm north of Alliston, Lot 17 Essa & Tosoronto [Tosorontio] within earshot of Camp [Borden] where sometimes in the early morning she could hear drums and bugles...She married Edgar Kneeshaw on [January] 7, 1920. The couple lived in West Gwillimbury for a while before moving to a farm, a few miles south of Bond Head. They had one son, Keith. Lulough attended a business school in Barrie. She worked at a flour milling company in Bradford."
"My thoughts about the sewing book. Lulough was a married lady when she decided to sew. She was likely working in Bradford at the time and had access to the high school where she could have taken night classes."

Personnel files of one hundred and seventy-eight personnel who served in World War I with ties to South Simcoe. Research was commenced by Jan Coward. After her passing, a group of research assistants are working to verify the research and share this publicly. Original database exists as an online spreadsheet. Reseach assistants have identified which personnel files have been verified.
