For many years he was secretary of the Ontario Trustees and Ratepayers Association (Rural Division). On October 28th, 1906, he married Effie Banting, daughter of the late Charles Banting and Jane McDermott. Through this union three sons and two daughters were born, Neil, England; Marjorie (Mrs. Herbert Goss), Orillia; Gilbert H., Cooksville; C. M. (Mac) on the old homestead, and Jean, Phm.B. of Toronto. He loved his church, always being a staunch Presbyterian, and for many years was elder of Bond Head and later Bradford Presbyterian Churches.
