Former teacher gets Queen's Jubilee Medal

"Miss Barbara Stewart, former Bradford public school teacher, has been awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. Miss Stewart, who retired last year after 36 years of teaching, said from her Markham home Friday, "I don't know how I got it or who recommended me. It came by registered mail last month and it was a complete surprise." She joins Bradford lawyer Charles Evans as a recipient of the medal, awarded to persons who have made outstanding contributions to the community. She said she had just returned from a trip to Germany, and would soon go back to Bradford public school for a day to tell the students about her trip. As for retirement, "I'm just loving every bit of it.""

"Oh! Canada" Official Languages Kit

"Oh! Canada" kit, distributed to primary school children in Canada (2.5 million), including in Bradford West Gwillimbury. It was a result of the Official Languages Act passed in 1969 and the Canadian government's efforts to work-out Canada's French/English history and identity going forward. The kit was created by Keith Spicer, Canada's Commissioner of Official Languages from 1970 - 1977.

"Barbara Catherine Melbourne, 20, of Bradford has graduated from the Sheridan College School of Nursing. A total of 115 nurses will take part in the convocation ceremony at Glenforest Secondary School in Mississauga on Friday. Barbara completed a two-year course to acquire nursing registration."

"Bradford District High School has one Ontario Scholar this year: Cathy Lucas of RR 1, Lefroy, with an average of 80.2 per cent. Eighteen-year-old Cathy will go on to York University in the fall to study physical education and mathematics, but she said Monday that she hasn't made up her mind about what she wants to do when she graduates. Ontario scholars receive a $100 cheque to help defray the costs of expenses in university."
