Description : The very sudden passing of Ross Ewart Bell at his home in West Gwillimbury on Monday morning of last week, May 7, 1956, came as a shock to his family and to his many friends throughout the district. A heart condition had made it necessary for Mr. Bell to lead a less active life for about the past three years, but he had been about as usual and visiting friends until his last illness of less than two days' duration.A son of the late Andrew and Alice Bateman Bell, Mr. Bell was born 62 years ago in the Gilford district and spent his entire life there, where he was well known, highly esteemed, and very popular. He was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Coulson's Hill, and a life member of Simcoe Masonic Lodge No. 79. For nine years Mr. Bell was assessor for the Township of West Gwillimbury, resigning that position because of poor health two years ago last fall.In 1919 he married Elizabeth Hodgson of West Gwillimbury, who survives him, with their four daughters and one son, Marguerite (Mrs. Gerald Roberts), Jean (Mrs. Frank Kell, Jr.), Gladys, Thomas, and Doris. Four brothers and four sisters also survive, namely, Roy Bell of Barrie; Ernest Bell of Gilford; Viola (Mrs. E. Carnahan) of Elmvale; Clara (Mrs. Wm. R. Baynes) of Barrie; Harold Bell of Gilford; Marjorie (Mrs. T. Scott) of Barrie; Dorothy (Mrs. R. Hood) of Toronto; and Frank Bell of Barrie. He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother, Mabel (Mrs. H. Hughes) of Gilford; Miss Edna of Gilford; and Clarence of Meriden, Conn. The funeral which was attended by many relatives and personal friends, was held from his home on Thursday afternoon at 2:15, thence to St. John's Presbyterian Church, Coulson's Hill, for service at 3 o'clock. His minister, Rev. H. P. Maitland, conducted the services which were under Masonic auspices. The pallbearers were Masonic friends and neighbours, Elwood Bateman, Chas. T. S. Evans, William Jelly, Milton Ritchie, Alex W. Spence, and Fred Wilcox, the latter of Brampton. As well as the many friends in the district, the funeral was attended by friends from Niagara Falls, Markdale, Elmvale, Barrie, Brampton, Toronto, Orillia, Newmarket, Langstaff, Beeton and Alliston.

Description : In last week's issue of this newspaper, the death was recorded of Nursing Sister Isabelle J. Neilly, who during her long life devoted her energy, ability and professional training to the service of others. Miss Neilly died following a long illness in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Orillia, on May 5. She was born in Cookstown on May 24, 1877, but Gilford had been home to her during most of her life.Miss Neilly went overseas during World War I as a Nursing Sister and her duties were largely in the far eastern war zones. She nursed in a small regimental hospital seven thousand feet up in the Himalayas, and when a cholera epidemic broke out in Bombay in 1919 she volunteered to staff a civilian hospital taken over by the British. In this hospital she was the lone Canadian, her fellow nurses being from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Australia and New Zealand. It was for service at that time that she received letters from the city corporation of Bombay and the Presidency Trades Association Ltd. These were framed and were among her most prized possessions to the last.Other points where she served were Capetown, Durban, the Persian Gulf and Suez areas. Her uniform as a nursing sister is in the Women's Institute Museum in Barrie.Following her return to Canada she served as assistant superintendent in Memorial Hospital, Listowel, in Chicago for a number of years, and in Orillia. In recent years her interest turned to the making of beautiful quilts and each year at the Simcoe County Quilt and Rug Fair her appliqued floral quilts, finely worked on white grounds, had no rivals for first place in their class.A military funeral was held at the Doolittle Funeral Home, Orillia, on Sunday evening, May 6. On Monday morning she was brought to the old family home, now her brother and sister-in-law's home, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Neilly Sr., at Gilford where she rested until the service on Tuesday afternoon from St. Paul's Anglican Church, Coulson's Hill. Interment was in the family plot in St. John's Presbyterian Cemetery. She is survived by two brothers and one sister, Louis A. Neilly, Gilford, Mrs. A. G. Foster (Myra), Collingwood, and William E. Neilly, Mimico. The pallbearers were her five nephews, namely, George Foster, Collingwood; Jack Neilly, Mimico; Louis G., Allen Sam, and William N. Neilly, all of Gilford; and her cousin, Ross Neilly.
