Description : "Age: 64th year. Born in Bradford on December 12, 1838, as the second, but oldest living son of Thomas and Jane Driffill. His father, Thomas, had come to Bradford before it was a town, and was first married in 1830. His first wife died, and he remarried, and had eight children. Only four survive: Mrs. Jeffs, Bond Head; James Driffill, Toronto; Mrs. T.S. Graham, Bradford; Miss C.E. Driffill, Newmarket. Joseph was married in May 1869 to Margaret E. Clinkenbroomer, daughter of Joseph Clinkenbroomer, then of Bradford. They had four children, of whom Alfred and Edna survive. Arthur died in 1894 at age 24 (or in 1895 at age 25), and Louisa in 1898, at age 23. Joseph partnered with his brother James and ran a hardware store on the corner of Holland and Simcoe Street. Bradford Model School, 1877-1951
Part of WEGWHIST Collection
The Bradford Model School pictured was constructed in 1878 to replace a previous building destroyed by fire.
Mr. Frank Wood was the first principal in 1878.
It was established by Simcoe County Council for the training of teachers, and by 1907, 496 teachers were trained there.
Upon the discontinuance of Model training in Ontario, the building continued to be Bradford Public School until the new Bradford Public School was erected in 1951. The Model School was located east of the present school.
It consisted of three rooms downstairs, and two large ones upstairs. It was made of brick, and was heated by two coal furnaces.

Holland Street West Lined with Cars

Holland Street looking east towards the Barrie/Simcoe Street intersection. Kilkenny Furniture is on the left side, and the Queen's Hotel is the most visible sign on the right.
Part of Local History Collection
This is a picture of Holland Street looking west when it was just a dirt road. Notice the trees that used to line the street. The white building on the right was the post office and up to 1915 was home to the first library in town. The dark building beside it was a laundry .
Part of Local History Collection
Notice how while there are cars parked on the street, others are still using horse and carriage.
