Event Date : Wednesday, September 10, 1958 Event Type : Death Municipality : Community : Beeton Street : Lot : Concession : 0 Description : Henry Coburn, 38, of Beeton was killed instantly last Wednesday when he was crushed beneath the front end of a loader he was driving.Mr. Coburn was employed by the Simcoe County Council. He had just left the shed at Beeton and was driving along County Road No. 1 about one mile west of Beeton when the loader slid into a ditch and rolled on top of him.Although no person in motor vehicles passing along the road noticed the up-turned vehicle in the ditch, it was Messrs. Ernie Letts and Ted Elmer, passing in a truck, who stopped to examine the heavy loader and found the unfortunate man pinned beneath it.The heavy front end loader Coburn was operating is fitted with a large bucket supported by heavy steel bars, used in raising and lowering it. When the vehicle was being driven along the road it is reported to have been prodeeding in reverse at about eight miles an hour. The operator had to look over his shoulder to steer the machine. Apparently the vehicle was travelling on the shoulder of the road before it toppled into the ditch. One of the heavy bars struck Coburn on the head before the machine pinned him underneath.Henry Coburn, who was in his 39th year, had been a lifelong resident of Beeton. He was employed by Ernie Letts Construction for over 10 years as a truck driver and also with the Township of Tecumseth and County of Simcoe in the same capacity. He had been employed with the County for the past year.He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Bowman, and his aunt, Miss Anne Willoughby.
