Description : Another pioneer of the Holland Marsh, Mr. Jan Rupke, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Bos, Toronto, where he had resided during the past few years, on Wednesday, February 20. Apparently enjoying fairly good health, the tidings of his sudden death came as a shock to his relatives and many friends in this district. He was in his 76th year. The Rupke family came from Holland to Canada in 1929 and first resided in Hamilton. In 1934 they were members of that first group of families to establish year-round residence and form a settlement on the then undeveloped Holland Marsh in what was commonly referred to as the Dutch Settlement.Mr. Rupke possessed the qualities for leadership, so necessary during those trying first years of settlement, and his sound advice and confident assurance in the future of the marsh was a tremendous support to his neighbours during the crucial years of 1934 to 1938, when the many disappointments associated with those pioneer days were experienced.Mr. Rupke was an optimist and real community man, friendly and esteemed among the senior neighbours, and respected for his sound advice among the younger people of the settlement.Rich in experience, his disappointments as well as the encouraging experiences of his past life often stimulated and encouraged, raising the morale of those who listened to his advice.A life-long member of the Christian Reformed Church, Mr. Rupke promoted the establishment of the first congregation on the Holland Marsh and the building of the first little church. It was his conviction that a community without active church life could not develop into a strong community. He was a propagator of the Christian School movement and his dream was realized when a private school was built where Christian instruction is given. And now he is no more. He has gone the way of all flesh. He has come to the end of a rich and full life, during which his experiences were matched by few.The funeral service was held in the Holland Marsh Christian Reformed Church at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, where the relatives and many friends gathered to pay their last respects to the departed one. The pastor of the church, Rev. P. Lagerwey, conducted the service, speaking briefly on a verse taken from Revelations: 14-16, Blessed are those which die in the Lord from henceforth Yea said the spirit that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them."The remains were taken to Mount Pleasant Cemetery Bradford for interment beside his wife the late Jansje Hubertha van der Geur who predeceased him on September 4 1946. At the graveside the former pastor of the church Rev. J. van der Meer of Barrie spoke words of comfort to the relatives. He is survived by his children: Mr. and Mrs. Chris Rupke Reuwyk (Holland); Mr. and Mrs. Gys Rupke The Hague (Holland); Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rupke Utrecht (Holland); Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bos (Dien) Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Rupke Newmarket; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rupke Burlington; Mr. and Mrs. John Rupke Kettleby; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brands (Nellie) Ansnorveld; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Rupke Kettleby; and 29 grandchildren; also by seven sisters and one brother one sister in Sweden two in the Netherlands two in the U.S.A. and two in Springdale. His brother is in Ansnorveld. The pallbearers at the funeral were the following grandchildren Pete Grunstra Chris Rupke Sierk Rupke Bill Rupke Jack Rupke and Neil Sneep. The memories of Jan Rupke will always be pleasant ones and will not soon be forgotten by those who knew him so well surely"Blessed are those which die in the Lord.Yea that they may rest from their laboursAne their works will follow them.""
