Description : Long years of invalisism were terminated in the death of Mrs. Thomas Stewart at her home on
Concession 10, West Gwillimbury, on Wednesday, April 29. Eight years ago last February Mrs. Stewart broke her hip and since that time she had been bedfast. She was in her 89th year.Born on Yonge
Street, between Newmarket and Holland Landing, the late Mrs. Stewart's maiden name was Sophronia Phillips. She was the last surviving member of a large family, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Asa Phillips. Mr. Stewart was also a native of the Newmarket area, and they were married there, moving to the present Stewart home in West Gwillimbury in 1902.A quiet, home-loving woman, as were most of the ladies of her generation, Mrs. Stewart's interests outside her home were in her church. She was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Coulson's Hill, and a life member and devoted worker in the W.M.S. of that church so long as her physical health permitted. Despited her long years of invalidism she remained mentally alert and interested in her family and friends.Mr. Stewart died in 1939. Mrs. Stewart is survived by three daughters, namely, Mrs. Ernest Bell (Iva) of Gilford, Miss Marjorie at home, and Mrs. Wm. Armstrong (Mabel) of Mimico; and one son, Asa Stewart, at home. A daughter, Bert (Mrs. C. Bowles), predeceased her.The funeral was held from her late residence on Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by her minister, Rev. E. C. McLarnon, and interment was in St. John's Cemetery, Coulson's Hill. The pallbearers were three grandsons, Andrew, Robert and John Bell, and three neighbours, Clarence Brown, George Hartman and Jos. Gordon.
