"When the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury announced that it would mark Bradford's 150th Anniversary with a series of special events starting Dec. 31st, 2007 and culminating with the Canada Day celebration on July 1, 2008, there were protests: The incorporation of the village of Bradford took place on May 27, 1857 - and although the inaugural meeting of the Council was held January 1st, 1858, the sesquicentennial year is clearly 2007..."

New Sesquicentennial Steering Committee

"BWG Council passed a Bylaw appointing the members of the new Sesquicentennial Executive Steering Committee - a committee of Council set up to oversee decisions on the celebrations for the 150th Anniversary of Bradford.
Councillor Del Crake was appointed Chair of the Committee; members are Councillors Jeanny Salmon, James Leduc, and Mark Contois.
The Committee will work with the Recreation Department, and with residents, organizations and groups interested in hosting events or getting involved in the Municipal celebration, which will take place from Oct. '07 to Sept. '08.
Among the suggestions: a Celebration Logo Contest, a re-enactment of the inaugural meeting of Council, a Winterfest, Super Picnic, Fireworks, sports tournaments and Civics awards. A New Year's Gala on December 31st, 2007, will be a major fundraiser for an "artifact of object" to be unveiled on July 1, 2008.
The next meeting of the Committee is on February 12th. Any community group or organization interested in getting involved in the Sesquicentennial should contact Manager of Recreation Nick Warman,....

Dear mother of Rick Wist and his wife Jane, and the late Jim Wist. Dear nan of Kim, Jaimie, Jodi and David. Dear great nan of Nicholas. Dear sister of Jim (Late Olga) Michin. Friends called at Skwarchuk Funeral Home, Bradford for visitation. Funeral service was held in the Lathangue Chapel on Monday, January 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. followed by cremation.

WEGWHIST reunion

Description : The 5th Anniversary of the WEGWHIST (West Gwillimbury History) Project will take place on October 19th, 1:30 p.m. at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library. The meeting will feature a presentation of 2 copies of Governor Simcoe Slept Here: The Legacy of West Gwillimbury Township to representatives from each school in BWG, thanks to a generous local patron. The meeting will also feature a display of the development of the book, from the first list of the Table of Contents, through to the final text approved for printing - a once-in-a-lifetime happening. There will be a social time, to chat and reminisce. All are welcome to attend.

Description : Passed on to his heavenly home at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket, of Maple Farm, Bradford where he lived all his life. Beloved husband of Ruby (Strasler) for 59 years. He was blessed with children Susan (Ronald) Black of Ottawa, Allan (Heather) of Bradford, and Jean (Richard) Swagerman of West Hill. Dear brother of the late Gordon (late Kay and late Doris) Faris and late Lieutenant Keith Faris. Dear grandfather of Rebecca (Trevor) Cullen, Ruth and Paul Black; Krista (David) White, Holly, Joshua (Caroline), Amanda and Hope Faris; Derek, Joel, Luke and Sarah Swagerman. Dear great grandfather of David and Mark White. Maple Farm was also the home of Mafar Shorthorns and Yorkshires. Murray was a longtime member of Christian Businessmen of Canada. His life verse was Prov. 3:5,6. Friends called at Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 30 Simcoe Road, Bradford for visitation. Funeral Service was held at Springdale Christian Reformed Church, 1466 5th Sideroad, Bradford on Monday, August 28, 2006 at 11 a.m. Interment Auld Kirk Cemetery, Bradford.

Resigning from fight for the Holland Marsh

Art Janse has been involved in the Holland Marsh all of his life, as a resident, a farmer, a Town employee for 45 years, and drainage superintendent for Bradford West Gwillimbury and King Township. Janse is retiring due to the response from many of the farmers to his ideas for the Holland Marsh Drainage Scheme improvements that would also improve the safety for motorists. The project has a high price tag of bout $17 million but Janse has won the right to assess upland residents a share of the cost, and has made the case for contributions from municipalities, OMAFRA, Transportation, Natural Resources and Environmental Ministries, and Conservation Authorities.
