Description : During recent months friends of Mr. James R. Webb had been concerned about his health, realizing by his appearance that he could not be well, but being a man who had never been concerned about himself, he kept on going to business. Eight weeks before his death he sought medical advice and was immediately taken to hospital, his case being diagnosed as dreadful leukemia. From the first it was stated that his illness would be short. He passed away on Sunday, March 18, in his 58th year.James R. Webb was one of Bradford's best known business men. He was born in Bradford, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James A. Webb, and was educated in Bradford schools. Early in life he joined his father in the butcher store, in a store where father and son's knowledge and care of meats made the name of Webb's meats a trade name with select patronage over a thirty or more year period, not only in the Bradford district, but for that big summer trade passing through to northern holiday resorts.James R. Webb had served on Bradford Council. He was the first president of Bradford Rotary Club. Like his father, he loved lacrosse and was a member of Bradford's Tri-County championship team in 1932. In recent years his interest was curling and he had been active in the local curling club. His church was Trinity Anglican, Bradford, the church which he attended since childhood.James R. Webb married Muriel Houghton of Bradford on September 12, 1932. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Roberta (Mrs. Don Whitmore) of Newmarket, and two sons, Jamie and Richard, at home. Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers, Miss Birdie Webb of Bradford; Mrs. Louis Walker (Gussie) of Lindsay; George of Mimico; Ben of Toronto and Mrs. H. Hillary (Mary) of Gormley.Much sympathy is felt throughout the district for Mrs. Webb and the family in their bereavement, and in the business section of the town his passing is keenly felt. The departure of the head of a long-established business is sadly missed. The funeral was held on Wednesday, March 21, from Trinity Anglican Church, with Rev. E. R. Woolley conducting the services. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The pallbearers were Brad. Walker, Norman Porter, Norman Collings, Keith Kilkenny, T. H. Gardner and Brock Evans.
